Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Noob with MK4 Golf

Joined up as i just got myself a little daily 2000 MK4 GLE.
Nice little 2 litre, 5 speed with 13x,000 on the clock.
    Power everything with sunroof etc.

Here are some pics and any help with fitment/stance would be appreciated.
Will only be lowering/wheels/tint on this as its meant to be just a daily work commuter.

Thanks Thinking of lowering it just on coils. Would love to go bags thou.I think some 18x8.5 +30 all round would be ideal for the MK4s.

So took the little MK4 down to the local mechanic for a once over after purchase and everything about it was A1 mechanically.
Gave it the usual oil change with oil & air filter change etc.
Only drama i have is with the idle. It sits around 800rpm and will spike to around the 1400rpm and then back down to 800rpm. Not all the time but more so then not. Any ideas on what could be the cause? Air leak somewhere after the MAF or slightly sticky throttle butterfly?
One last situation i have seems to be the Shocks are on their last legs, the car is 133,xxx old and makes a clunk/knocking noise over bumps at low speed (below 60kph) but cant seem to hear it or do it on higher speeds as i suspect the rebound on the strut hasnt got enough time as when it does at the slower speed to hear it?

Open to all suggestions etc, thanks guys

It probably needs new shocks, at that many KM it is very likely. If you are going to lower it get new shocks to suit the springs.
Other bits like control arm and sway bar bushes perish also.

Thanks mate, i had an idea it might have been the shocks getting a bit lazy but good just to clarify.
Now the problem is to get coils or shortened shocks with lowered springs, as the difference cost wise would only be a few hundred dollars. What are some of the coil setups that are good value for money for a daily drive?

Pop over to the Mk4 section mate. Have a read around do some searches.

You get what you pay for with suspension. $200 for some springs is basic, $2,000 for some top range coilover setup will be 10 times better.
Personally I did the springs only and it was OK for a while but the stock shocks died after a few years. I watched the forum until I saw someone upgrade, then made an offer on their old stuff. So I got Lito's H&R Spring and Bilstein Shocks with about 12 months use on them. 50mm drop is sweet & handles great, but coil overs would be better still.

                Have a read, get educated.

Well turns out the rear shocks are leaking, the right hand front rackend needs replacing and the front strut mounts are gone.
Will be purchasing some coil overs in the next few days

                      Thanks Dylan8.
It is in need of a good polish to get rid of the paint swirls/marks other then that, just a few small things to tidy up and it should be a little gem. FK Street Coilovers should be here Friday week, can't wait to wind them pricks down haha

This is as low as I could drop my car without my wheels grinding against my struts. Rears could be a bit lower though. I really can't remember exactly how much I lowered it, but I believe it may have been 20-30mm
