  • New here ex evo owner!

    Hi all,

Just doing the required intro so can see the rest of the site lol.

Names Trae from Melbourne, Vic. I have just bought a mk4 golf GTI about 2 weeks ago and looking around for mods to do I've already purchased a few interior, exterior and engine mods just waiting for them to come in. I am still looking for a few things though forge/samco or whatever's good TIP, smic cooler or just the hose kit, downpipe, n75j valve and a tune if anyone knows a sponsor on here or local to Aus site I can purchase these things from I'd be glad to know (I have already tried esc etc but shipping is crazy ATM and they require bank transfer not PayPal)

Anyways have been around the scene a bit (ex hardtuned.net moderator and member of numerous car forums) I have owned a fair few cars from nissan turbos, bmw's, Holden v8's and my last major project the evo 7 which I sold due to family/business purposes got the bug again so got one of these GTI's to play with.

Feature on the evo can be found here for anyone interested: Legitimate Evolution | ESTBLSHD - Automotive Lifestyle Origins I miss the car put a lot of time money and effort into it but life goes on.

Also heaps of pics of the build can be found on photo bucket: Mobile Photobucket

    Cheers Trae

Welcome to the forum buddy, nice choice in cars! Any pics of it? I may be biased but if you're looking for a tune I recommend Gavin from optimum code. He's a sponsor on here and a top bloke, and I think custome-code are the only ones in Australia that offer a stage 2 tune for the mk4 ecus. If you want some good ideas for mods and want to drool a little I recommend checking out the 1.8t engine forum on vwvortex as well.

Welcome Trae nice car choice. The only places I could find N75J valves are ECS or eBay, both pretty expensive with the shipping tho

Don't blow your money on an N75. Most tunes are written for the standard valve, with little to be gained from the money spent.

Welcome to the forum by the way.

Thanks mate, yeah it is a nice little daily which I'll mod to my liking and hopefully keep its economy lol not as quick as some other cars I've had but that's ok not going for top speed on this one. Will look into custom code thanks but since I'm in Melbourne I might look local have heard good things about Dub-Addiction and GIAC (plan on stage 2 no further engine wise) not sure how to get pics up yet as I use my mobile but I'll post some below once I figure it out.

Thanks mate! Yep I noticed ECS have the N75 race valve I'm assuming that's the same thing? See how I go may not swap out for the stock one just yet.

Welcome to the forum by the way.

          Gavin
Thanks for the welcome & advice as above and after more research probably don't need to upgrade it just yet! I'm assuming you're the person Lito speaks of above in referance to the tunes? I'm looking to wait till I have have all the bolt on parts I want (few more to get still) and then do the tune, I've read that with the VW's people do the tune first then add the mods later but I don't get this 100% as I've come from Jap imports mostly where you do mods first then tune.

Either way would like to hear your advice I'm after bit of power for daily duties most probably stage 2 no turbo upgrading or anything would I need to upgrade injectors & fuel pump?

          My plan atm is:

SMP or similar 3" downpipe (mated to stock cat-back)
          Forge or similar TIP
SMP or similar SMIC or just upgrade to forge or similar silicone hose kit
          Forge DV (have)
          Piper-Cross Panel Filter (have)
          Flash Tune

Have seen that should get me a good fwkw figure. Anyways more research and reading for me

We do have a bloke who can customise the tune for you in VIC if need be through V-Tech as well

No need to change the injectors unless you go to a K04. At which point you should replace the fuel pump as well as a precaution.

I think what you are seeing with the VWs is people getting a stage 1 tune then changing hardware, this invariably requires a change of software on everything after the MK4 as there's fault codes that occur due to hi flowing CATs.

This isn't a problem on the MK4, so you could get a stage 1 tune and it would be happy with pretty much all mods that I can think of right noiw.

You should consider getting a poly dogbone insert before you go mad with the tuning.

Car's looking sweet man, kinda reminds me of mine when I first got it, nice and un-molested. Your plan looks good so far, search the classifieds before going and buying new parts, lots of good stuff comes up in there (I have dogbone mount inserts for sale atm )

Cheers mate! Picked it up for 4k so can't complain lol I like the shape kinda classic like the e46 I guess. Thanks for the heads up also will be looking into tuning by years end or early next.

Thanks for the great info, I would have usually change the pump by now as I do with all my cars just because I don't know whether there's a 10+ year old pump inside or not. Might look into a walbro or whatever's good for these things in future.

Ah ok yes I do remember reading something along those lines in my searching, I think I like to do things once that's why I like collecting parts and throwing everything I need on at once in this golfs case not much and will likely go stage 2 if possible and leave it at that to be safe (sometimes I over kill things, most tuners seem to like it and that's just how I am).

Yep on top of it already ordered a power-flex dog-bone insert 60 or 70A can't remember now.

Thanking you for your useful info much appreciated.

As above I have the inserts coming already (wanted BFI went with powerflex see how they are) cheers though

I'm not too sure if he race valve is the same as the n75j to be honest,
That list sounds amazing man!!! Cant wait to see it all on,
Where did you pick up the R line rear bumper from if you don't mind me asking? I've wanted one for a while now but didn't wanna spend 900 on one

USRT for an uprated intank pump. Not necessary unless you are going with a bigger turbo, hybrid. Otherwise just watch the AFR gauge. Don't get a Walbro or fit something inline, there's no need.

No worries I think I'll skip the valve ATM anyways guess I'll see what whoever ends up tuning it thinks! Thanks the starred things in my list I haven't got yet I've just got mainly little bull**** mods ATM I guess I have about half the items and have the bigger things left to purchase. There's a number of places you can get the bar from I originally wanted a PU/ABS plastic like oem style body kit (would source oem but don't have any part numbers) but after much searching they seem to be crap fitting.

Srs-TEC in the uk although FRP/GRP seem to have the best fitting copy's out there and although I don't like fibreglass I'm going to go with it on this car. Here's a link few options to choose from and not sure about shipping ATM

                          Golf 4 -> VW - [SRS-Tec GmbH Germany]

No problems thanks Gavin I will take your advice and scratch the pump ATM also. Was only thinking for peace of mind but if you say the oem pump is up to it I'll go with that
