07 Passat towbar

Hi Folks

This is my very first post, hows that for exciting. I have an 07 passat diesel wagon and am looking for a tow bar. My call to the VW dealer left me with heart palpitations at the price and my phone call to a guy in Syd resulted in a quote for 1/2 the price. Does anybody know if Haymen & Reese tow bars and their e.c.u. work effectively on a my car or should i be blowing the extra dollars and going for original.

Seems people have had success with HR Just remember the Passat has an 85KG towball limit but HR say theirs has 180 kg limit.

I would never put that much on the back of a Passat so you should stick to VW recommendation.

As above, the HR one with it's electrics will work fine, but as far as ball weights go, HR are a law unto their own so not ADR-approved.

With the genuine kit, the big money is in the installation of the wiring.

There is actually no legal ball weight limits in any state in Australia.

Only recommendations to adhere to manufacturers published limits.

Have had this out with 4WD's and HR having different limits on similar model towbars in the past.

They had one bar with a low towball limit and when questioned simply issued a different compliance plate to allow a higher limit.

Their bars are normally ADR approved as to design etc but doesn't make them compliant with any particular vehicle they are fitted to.

Various model 100 series Landcruisers in my case as several differently rated bars fitted, some Ok, some not.

That is up to the owner to comply with the rules
