  • QLD 1996 VW Golf Mk3 - genuine knock sensor for reasonable price

first post. l have been through a heap of forums to save asking a question that may've already been answered, but didn't have any luck.

So for the past 2 months I have had no luck finding a quality/genuine knock sensor for my 1996 Mk3 Golf online.
(original was obviously old because I wasn't trying to unclip, or adjust the sensor, I simply moved it out of road gently to replace spark plug leads, and the whole plastic casing just crumbled off exposing the wires)

Eventually decided to see the guys at "Parts For Cars" in Toowoomba, QLD. And I was quite shocked when he told me it'd cost $350 (that includes item cost and shipping) and of course my last option locally was the Volkswagen dealership, but prices were even higher. Also i don't think they would've sold it on its own. I didn't ask because he then mentioned because its an electrical item, which of course won't always, but always can create other issues if not installed properly because it feeds information to the computer? so he said I'd need to book in an appointment to get it fitted In shop? Otherwise it can come back on them warranty wise? Had never heard that before.

Now I do not know what the average cost is for a genuine knock sensor. But I'm really hoping someone might have one to sell? or even know of a parts car with a mechanically sound item, or may even have a spare laying around?

Also Apart from that if there are any websites you recommend with quality/affordable knock sensors that'd be good value for money, then id love to hear from you! The websites I found either didn't ship to Australia, Or they just had very little information about item and seller information. And I'm not anal, I just refuse to cut corners and buy one cheap when 90% of items i found cheap online have a very very broad description without any part number. Basically like paying money for a lucky dip when you have an exact item to buy, it just doesn't work well...

Your help will be greatly appreciated.
And also if that item cost of $300 - $350 is around normal. Just let me know so I can stop looking around. I just believe there would have to be cheaper around,

Thought a post here was my best chance. Where people may have previously dealt with a similar situation. Because I've exhausted my options. even car part dealerships and quite a few mechanics i went to for advice looked like it was their first day on the job. And i do know for a fact, not overly many mk3 golfs have got around the area where i live. That was why i got it, but different compared to all the new ones getting around.

Now though I have realized its going to make life difficult at stages and thats a fact. But its exciting testing my limits and just researching everything I can so that i can slowly work on the car myself. This means these forums and everyone's advice will be depended on like a priest depends on his bible. So if you own a volkswagen, or just share the passion for the careful attention to details, style and comfort that comes associated with European manufacturing. Then any suggestions are welcome and I might be able to get to atleast 1 friend on here whom I can share my knowledge with

    Welcome to the forum mate.

What engine code is the Golf? Genuine parts are expensive, but non-gen are not usually any worse performing in my experience.

If you have the number google it and see what comes up.

Can you get me a part number on the knock sensor? I'm a bit late in to this thread and have two of them laying around doing absolutely nothing for me!
