Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • WA Hello friends, new GTi owner :)

    G'day all,

The last couple days have been a whirlwind, the wife has a new car, I've sold my absolute pride and joy 2006 STi and have just put a deposit on a 2007 MY08 Golf GTi

Always liked the Golf so as a compromise I think this will keep the smile on my dial! Haven't had a FWD since I was a young chap with a Suzuki GTi but fond memories there. On my brief test drive I loved the quality of the car, I didn't give it too much stick but I've been lucky enough to score an unmolested example with extremely low k's (one lady owner, full service history, 55K kms)

Browsing the forums already looking for upgrades as I do quite like my cars to go, stop and corner well! Thanks for reading, looking forward to my VW adventure!

Welcome to VWW moshriff! What made you sell the STi (Impreza presumably)?

Just like with the Subie, there's plenty of potential for going (a lot) faster with a GTI. Start with a tune and go from there.

Thanks for the welcome! I bought the STi the day our son was born (almost 5 months ago now) Unfortunately we've had a bit of a rough trot so constant trips to the hospital necessitated a new car for the wife alot sooner than expected Had to man up and sell one of the toys and seeing as how summer is coming the bike stays...

I've been frantically reading forums all weekend, seems like a stage 1 will be a minimum for me as both the STi and the 180 before it had quite a bit of go. Will be calling a workshop tomorrow because this is all new to me and I really think I need to chat to someone to map out what I want to achieve.

There are tons of tuners out there all competing for your business, with different philosophies and charging points. There's also local support and provision for future mods to consider, before you even start thinking about power and refinement. And of course every man and his dog has a different opinion too.

The advice I'd give you is to read up on all the tuners and their strengths and weak points, and make your decision after that. Specialist workshops and tuners can be helpful to talk to, but be mindful that they'll likely be trying to sell you a specific product, so if you can talk to someone who's a VAG expert but doesn't sell tunes (or products that go with specific tunes), that'd be best.
