Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    G'day i'm Frank

I've been lurking around this forum for a while as i've been looking for a MK4 R32. Today I put a deposit on a reasonable DBP model #42, so i thought id finally join... couldnt take owner ship today as they have personal plates they want to keep and have to swap them out at the RTA. I was a little annoyed they weren't prepared to sell on the spot but they were an older couple selling the car, i even had to explain rego forms to them haha. the car isnt perfect and has 170,000kms but im buying from the original owner with log books filled out from vw dealers since new. and it still has the umbrella in it's can haha im very excited to finally call it mine!
i first heard about watercooled from a sticker i saw on a mk3 golf at macquarie uni, have no idea who owns it though. it was a pretty tidy little car.

    thats my story...

    Congratulations!

Welcome to the forum Frank. That car would have had to be the best MKIV R32 on carsales, IMO. Post some photos up of it as soon as you take ownership. A friend of mine owns #41 in DBP

My one criticism (and I'm being honest here) is that the photos of it on carsales weren't doing much justice being dirty. They sound moist and delicious with the flapper mod.

Great pick up. Love the Mk4 .:R32

lol robbie you're awesome! flapper mod videos and the noise is the main reason i bought/buying the car!
flapper mod will be the first thing i do, most likely with in a week or 2 depending on when i can get my mate around with his multimeter

this video in particular i've watched it countless times over the last few months while ive been saving my pennies and trying to sell my last car

Who said you need a multimeter to do the flapper mod on the R32? Whoever told you that is feeding you the wrong information, never heard that one before. Seriously. It takes 2-5 minutes to do the flapper modification on the MK4 R32's and MK5s.

The best video that showcases the flapper mod, IMO is the one I have linked above of Mal's MK4 R32. Got a few friends that currently own (used to own) MK4 R32's if you would like to meet up sometime for a photo shoot etc. Send me a PM and I'm sure I could have that organised in no time.

Take a look at mr8132 (Alex) MK4 R32 in the MK4 section of this forum his done some nice work. http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...bmp-88757.html

What are your plans for the car?

i need the mulitmetre because i want the switch! like so VWVortex.com - Exhaust Switch Mod ~ instructional walk-through
one of my plans will be res delete so i want the switch, and after having a 3" tbe on my wrx, which was my last car, im sure the missus will appreciate as well.

i dont think ill be doing anything out of the ordinary on the car, lowered, tune, cold air. black badges and lights. probably keep factory wheels but powered coat them black also. only thing im looking at doing which is different from other modded r32s is possibly heat wrapping the headers and pipe up until the cat. saving money and choosing what combo of bits i want is going to take a long time though...

Whoa! Just look at the amount of electrical work that is involved to set up a switch for the flapper. It's not worth the hassle and frustration playing around with all those wires Frank. There honestly is no need to go splicing wires for a switch when you can just do it instantly by following a few steps I have listed below. The flapper mod is easily reversible if you're not happy, thought I would let you know.

Volkswagen R32 MKIV 3.2 Search Flapper Switch ES#2168019 Exhaust Flapper Wiring Kit - 1J0998005

A friend of mine took out his resonator on his MK4 R32. I found it too loud inside the cabin and it continuously would drone at about 80km/h to the point of upsetting the locals. It's unbelievably loud and produces a ''gurgly'' sound with the resonator out, especially when you come off the accelerator.

IMO, just do the flapper mod as per these instructions - Disconnect the tube from the actuator unit, force a screw of size right inside to the end, double cable tied and cable tie it out of the way so it looks nice and tidy. It should sound deeper straight away after you disconnect the pipe, you will notice a change in the note.

If that above sounds a bit confusing then follow these steps below. Trust me the flapper mod on these cars is amazing

Look underneath on the left side (as you look at the rear of the car) You'll see a black rubber tube coming from the actuator. It's the only black rubber pipe attatched.

Pull the pipe off, plug it with a screw and secure a cable tie around it, keep the screw in place then secure the pipe with another cable tie so its out of the way.

Bright silver OEM Aristo's look the best and are my favourite OEM+ wheels.

                  What's the bodywork like?

haha that kit does seem to make it a bit easier, but i dunno if its worth $50 when all it's doing is saving me some time really. wiring isnt that hard when you have a clear guide of what is what like the one i posted. ill try out plugging up the pipe on the actuator, but i like the idea of the switch and i enjoy diy... i also like the gurgling sound when you lift off the gas, i think its a cool little noise.
ive considered de-resonating could be annoying, but i really like the buzz it makes! i was thinking of possibly having flanges added to the cut out section so if i didnt like it, and when i want to sell it, i could just swap it back. but i have no idea what labor costs would be on a cut a paste job like that, so maybe not. im hoping to hear one in the flesh before i make my decision on res delete

body work is decent... there a scratch on the edge of the drivers door form it hiting the guys fence when he opened it and front bumper has had a small knock. but you can only tell its out of alignment when you go looking for it. besides that and gutter rash it is neat!
they are really nice wheels, but i think blacking everything looks really good with the dbp

Have you thought about putting in a smaller resonator? A mate of mine has put in a smaller resonator on his MK4 R32 and it sounds sweet as it retains the signature burble. Glad to hear the bodywork is sound and not a complete mess compared to some others I've seen out there. Do you plan on fixing up the damage on the door? How bad is the knock on the front bumper? I'm sure with a bit of smash repair work that can be fixed up quite easily. My honest opinion, get it looking 100% before you start playing around with modifications and upgrades.

One thing about the MK4 R32 is its rare, making its value high for its age compared to a GTI, and a GTI can be modified to large power relatively cheaply, whereas the R32 is much more expensive to get big numbers from, but is possible to see 400-700kW if you want it. However, I'd do is Suspension, Rear LSD, and Rear Swaybar, in that order.

Something like this would look ace, IMO.

Look forward to the pictures once you take ownership
