Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • NSW New Member - Building MKVI 1.6 TDI Circuit/Track car

    Hi everyone,

Firstly to members who use other VW forums you will notice that I have posted this same topic around the web to try and get a wider range of opinions.

I am building a circuit racer for Australian National and State Production car series. This will be the first WV Golf TDI in the series and I hope to have it ready for next year’s competition. I am hoping to get some advice or ideas from members on upgrades.
    Car details:

    Golf MKVI 1.6 TDI
77KW CAYC engine with 5speed LHW gearbox
It getting the roll cage fitted by Peter and Allen at Bond Roll Bars in Sydney (top blokes).

I am up to the fun part of the following upgrades.

suspension - I was thinking Bilstein adjustables
brakes - Brembo has kits with disc dia 330mm and 4piston calipers (sounds good but ideas are welcome)
DPF delete – have not done this before so advice is welcomed
re-map/chips - competition requires that original ECU can start the car at request of scrutineers
bigger nozzles – how big is big?
maybe a diff (if there is one for these boxes) – try eliminate some of the torque steer but I have driven some tuned golfs and not to bothered by this.
Turbo upgrade might be an issue as there is a restriction on the inlet manifold pressure of 1.1bar – having done no pre diagnostics yet as car was delivered, stripped and off to roll cage; has anyone with a 1.6TDI fun a boost gauge on their car and noticed what they tend to peak at or are regulated to?

I know that most might be thinking why the 1.6 and not a 2.0 and even better the Australian GTD models which would provide a better starting ground. Answers are simple: 1. Money, 2. It is my first build of a dedicated circuit car and first year racing, 3. No other TDI’s and some of the races are endurance and I want to try get Diesels in Australian racing culture. This might open the door to a Golf Club race or series similar to the Swift series we have here currently. If the money was there I would have obviously when for a GTD (but that might have put me up a class and hence been less competitive).

Hello to all and thanks for everyone’s time.

Do you intend to keep it street legal. I don't think you'll get to remove the DPF if so.

A bigger turbo doesn't have to make more pressure, everyone gets this wrong. It's about the volume of air going into the engine.

Is that pressure restriction for all turbo cars or specific to the diesel?

The best advice I can give is to read the rule book - over & over & over again.

Try & aim for an unpopular classs where there aren't many competiors & the car doesn't have to be a total moneypit to be competive.

Weight removal will give more holistic gains than power increases.

Good luck with it & have fun.

        Hey Gavin,

No it wont be street legal. Also interms of the turbo, that's understandable but I am thinking more of efficiency and with the DPF removed it should be able to remove enough heat from the system anyway.
This 1.1bar restriction is for this make and model - the regulatory body determines the pressure of each F-I engine (some range up to 1.5bar and some even have to be tuned down from factory settings so I've been told).

Weight removal is the big one and the rules dictate the percentage of weight to be removed based on road rated weights and as thanks for the advice Brad on re-reading the rules - you pick up something new everytime you re-read them.

But it is all about fun and anyone thinking about joining the competition or racing themselves can check it out at CAMS - Confederation of Australian Motor Sport - After some hardwork (small costs) on my part and fighting with bureaucracy the 1.6TDI is now homologated so anyone can now race one.

Join TDiClub and check out the Power Enhancement forum - they don't have that engine in North America but there are European members.

There was a thread about a track car built up from a 6R Polo TDi - not sure how different the 1.6 TDi in that is to the Golf. But I also saw some discussion about these engines grenading when pushed hard.

Personally (and I mean literally), I'd build up a 9N3 Polo 1.9 PD TDi.

And budget for at least a Peloquin or WaveTrac TBD (a full on Salisbury is $$$$) and a strong clutch (eg Southbend Endurance spec).
I wouldn't go stupid on brakes as it forces you to jumbo (HEAVY) wheels with low profile ($$$$) semi-slicks.

3J production rules? So 27mm restrictor and 1.5fia multiplying factor (as FIA) or they still running 1.7?

            Be keen to see more.

No its 3E rules, 3J is for improved production where as I will be in production car. Will post photos as they come - at the moment there is just the roll cage. So I will wait till I get a little more work done.
