Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • WA 1999 Volkswagen Polo 1.6- gear linkage problems

    Hi All,
I've come on here to see if I can get some good information/advice on my car. I bought the car a few months ago and it's been running great except for one thing; the gear linkage. The gear shifting had been heavy, then one day the gearstick came unstuck from the linkage. The car was stuck in gear and I couldn't move it. I had it towed to a mechanic and he said he did a 'quick fix' on it and ordered bushings. The bushings were fitted, and the car seemed fine. The mechanic did say though that something had fallen off the gear selector cable and someone (Previous owner) had put a nut on there as a temporary solution. He said this was causing the problem. Anyway, long story short, I've been driving it and it's been okay. Now, it has stopped going into reverse. It goes in sometimes, but I have to wiggle the gearstick around and sometimes it takes about 10 minutes to shift it into reverse. The mechanic reckons I need a new clutch, but the clutch has been replaced on the vehicle one year ago. I really want to fix this as the car is perfect otherwise. All help appreciated! Thanks!

the linkages might just need adjusting...if it was the clutch it would fault in forward gears too....I remember years ago that there used to be the same sort of issue and the fix was to remove the reverse light switch from the gearbox and refit it with a small washer to make the switch sit back a bit further so the internals pass better...worth a try mate...VDUB..
