Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • NSW STi owner tempted by the R

    Hey all,

Iv been a Subaru fan pretty much all my life, having owned numerous Impreza's, STi's and a Liberty.
    I currently drive a 2008 WRX STI Spec R.

Reason for joining, is when I was looking to purchase my STi, I kept getting swayed by the Golf R, but chose the STi again as they are more familiar to me, and far far cheaper to maintain.

Have been noticing a few more R's on the road lately, and that desire has returned. Thought I would join up here to learn a bit more about the Dubs. My old lady has an Eos, but I have never personally owned a VDub.

Probably wont be a big poster on here - mainly here to read.

    Thanks for having me.

        Welcome Prezza

I've got a feeling the Mk7 Golf R could be pretty good value for money given that Audi is slashing $11k off the price of the S3 in December. Of course that means more waiting...
Some say he was the Stig... all we know is that he drives a VW Transporter.

The 2008 - 2013 Spec R's are pretty well identical in every way. The 08's came standard with the Recaros (where the '13 is optional extra), and the '13 also got a sunroof. Besides a tiny suspension tweak, the cars are exactly the same. Would be (in my opinion) a total waste of money selling the '08 for a '13.

Also, if i was to get a Golf R, it would be the DSG.

Cheers, but unfortunately I wouldnt be able to afford a Mk7. Would likely go for a 2010 DSG Golf R.. In grey or white.. yum, haha.

Careful, if you get the white one you'll be buying what some here call "the fridge"

                  Hahaha, thanks!

I think the biggest thing I cant get my head around, is that something so simple as replacing number plate globes with LED's requires coding? Seriously how does a LED mess things up? Ever car we have ever owned, if I wanted LED's, just buy some cheap white T10's, and swap them over in 5 seconds. No messing around.

Am I right here, that VW's need 'messing around' just to change a globe?

                    Welcome,

I went from a 08 liberty gt spec b tuned by sti with a thew mods to the polo gti and the only thing I miss is the all paw grip but it still more fun to drive and all the little things vw has compared to Subaru makes all the difference. Would have loved the R but I've wasted to much money on cars so had to pick lower from the tree. The refinement is much better then the subie. I had a auto liberty which is what let it down. So a r with dsg is much better option the a auto sti. But if I was to go manual I'd have a sti any day.

The car monitors the voltage through each globe so that if one fails, the dashboard computer (MFD) tells you about it straight away, and says which one to replace. The 'coding' just tells the module in the car that you've got different equipment basically. There's plenty of cool tricks/hacks that can be done on the Mk6 Golf via VCDS: http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...ary-50749.html

If you get the genuine led number plate lights you don't get the error. It's just the other lights that do it, but you can trick them with a load resister for the exterior stuff like brakes reverse ect. The interior ones are error free but stay on ever so slightly unless you leave one stock globe in. I think the R comes with led number plate lights standard.
