  • NSW Potential future Golf GTI owner :)

    Hi all,

I am currently doing some research on some cars, one of them being the Mk4 Golf GTI. Unfortunately my current car (94 Ford Lazer) has given up and I can't justify the quoted $3000 to rebuild the engine when I could just get another car.

Having said that, I am looking at a few cars, and at this stage the Mk4 Golf GTI 1.8T seems to be the best contender, but I have heard mixed stories regarding the reliability and running costs of these cars which has scared me off a bit. Being the kind of person that likes to get detailled information rather than listen to my fathers girlfriend rant, I figured that this forum will be able to give me some info regarding what to expect.

Depending on how this goes, perhaps I will be rolling around in a GTI soon

Not that unreliable TBH but could be easy to buy a pup, just like any secondhand car. There's a few pop up on the forms, which might be a bit more expensive but have probably been looked after a little better.

Maybe check out the A3 as well, same running gear as the Golf.

    Welcome to the forum too.

    Cheers

I did have a look at the A3, but they're are stretching out of my price range which I would assume has to do with the Audi badge.

Also thanks for the idea of checking the forums, some of the cars I've gone to have a look at have some 'questionable' owners and the history of the cars are often very vague. I came across one (not a Golf, was a Mazda 3) that had no service record from 08-11. I'd imagine that people on this forum would take much better care of their cars.

      Thanks for the advice
