Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • NSW Did Skoda make automatic Octavias for Australia that were not DSG?

    Hello All

My wife and I am looking for a family car and LOVE the Octavias we've seen, in fact would have bought one 2nd hand until I discovered the DSG concern.

Is it true that some Skodas sold here from 2007 had a non-DSG 6 speed automatic or not?

That would be our car if such exist.

    best regards

    Paul from Newcastle

Since 2010, Ford and Holden have had 21 safety recalls EACH.

The Octavia DSG gearbox is the 6 speed wet clutch version which is generally regarded as a strong unit with a low failure rate

I have not seen any of our Octavia members complaining of a DSG failure

APR Stage II ECU - APR 3" exhaust down pipe & high flow catalyst
APR/HP Roll bars - Eibach springs and Bilstien shocks

My mate's neighbour had a pre-fl diesel Octavia with a conventional automatic. It might have been the pumpe-duese diesel. It cacked itself & VW rebuilt under warranty. He's still driving it & I haven't heard of any other issues.

He bought about the same time as me (2008 ) and does 35,000km p/a, so I guess he has ~160,000km by now.

The 118tsi & 90tsi use the 7sp DSG with dry clutch. These aare the autos experiencing issues.

As Martin said, the other autos in the vRS (diesel & petrol) & the lesser diesels (103kw) were the 6sp wet clutch. The issues with them were pretty much sorted out a couple of years back. The main issue is that the worn clutch material contaminates the mechatronics as they share the same oil bath. The key to a long service life is to service the gearbox regularly. The workshop manual says every 60,000km IIRC (might have been 75,000km) but if it was me, I'd do it every 45,000km.

SO, your alternatives are to get a 90tsi/118tsi manual (the 6 speed manual is a sweet gearbox & copes with peak hour traffic nicely) or buy a vRS DSG.

I'm going to adopt that suggestion!
Oil is cheap in comparison to mechanical failures
I'm already replacing the engine oil every 10K (rather than every 15K)

Yes, it sounds excessive but I used to change the oil & filter & adjust the bands in my trimatic V8 Commodore every 12 months & never had a problem.

Used to do my Subaru Liberty auto every 50,000km & used some tricky castrol synthetic auto trans fluid which made the shift buttery smooth.

Here's a DIY for the 6sp DSG. Doesn't look overly difficult but there are some specialist tools & VCDS required.

              Great link - thankyou!

I have the special/simple tool and VCDS cable
