Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

so hows bout those dsg's eh? lol :p

    kidding!

so the story goes, ive never been big on vw's let alone euros but after driving a mk6 jetta around hawaii for over a week last year the romance started. my previous car was a 180sx, got it as a project car for circuit racing but like all good projects it never got off the ground and i only ended up driving it once a month so the battery wouldnt die lol. not helped by living within cycling/busstop distance to work or by its gradual deterioration in condition thanks to other drivers and roadworks :S ...and i think somewhere along the line i grew up (a little) lol or maybe i jsut got tired of looking over my shoulder for cops or idiots trying to race me.

but as luck would have it, couple weeks ago some flat brim capped kid put a note on the 180 saying he wanted to buy it sans rwc and rego so it was kind of hard to say no! after a week of dealing with a kid, it was on a trailer and i was scouring the classifieds for a new ride. thankfully it was a well trodden path for that mid size car with power and space category. wasnt a fan of the new accords, which i swear have started to look like camrys and the libertys were ...subarus :p (nothing against them, it would just mean me having to suck it up for having ripped on my wrx driving mates for so long lol) so a jetta was it and it got a from the missus since there was a bit of a sentimental connection for her (if she had her way we'd be getting a micra... cos its blue lol bless her)

the car itself came with 19" talla's, exhaust and chip which is what i was going to do to it. gotta love buying someone elses money pit tho i think i might ditch the 19s for some rs4 18s. anyone wanna buy some r rims?

i actually havent been on a car forum since my old tc16 corolla back in the day so im hoping its a bit more of a pleasant experience here than the usual car forum riff raff :p
as said im new to vw's and even more new to new cars, bluetooth that detects your phone? remote boot opening? adjustable headlight height? traction control? what kind of sorcery is this???!! tho i wish it would stop telling me to shift to 6th when im only doing 60kph!
so be warned a bunch of dumb questions will no doubt ensure so apologies in advance!

thats my cool story bro, i'll go scurry off to the jetta section now....

no immediate plans. going to get a feel for it first then see what it "needs". quite frankly im very happy with it as is apart from the boost delay when you put your foot down
wouldnt mind lowering it for a better look but my spine has been eternally grateful over the last weekend of driving compared to the bone jarring and sump scraping i used to have to deal with lol
most immediate thing would probably be getting rid of the chrome badges and maybe getting some custom plates. nothing ruins the look of a new car more than a gaudy maroon number plate!

Maybe an intake would give it a bit more response? I hear you on the number plate front, I cringe whenever I look at mine, just hard to justify paying $400 odd for something that won't make my go car faster lol. There's was dyno day about 2 weeks ago iirc. There seems to be one every couple of months or so

its got a k&n filter but i think its something more than just breathing. could also just be characteristics of the small capacity engine but i thought the SC was sposed to sort that out. will need to spend a bit more time giving it a bit of stick and gauge its response, maybe im just used to higher revving engines. currently going from a stand still to half throttle theres a little lag but that could be something to do with the traction control. in 2nd going from about 1/4 throttle to 3/4 throttle theres noticeable lull of about 1 second before it gets down and boogeys.
if the revs are around 3k theres alot less lag but thats the same with any turbo car. shame the mfd doesnt have a gauge option to see boost for both chargers
hopefully the dyno will be able to give me some hints as well

lol yea the $400 price tag is a killer, the americans have it right when they call them vanity plates! id be happy if you could get them in black and white like the old days but apparently thats a custom (and chargeable) feature now too! lol

saw the previous dyno days, will def. keep an eye out for the next one. i think going to one with fellow owners would be much more enjoyable and informative too (:
