Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Decided to join

For some years now I have been looking at this forum and finally decided I wanted to contribute so of course needed to join. I learned to drive in a VW Beetle a very long time ago. My father bought it as his first car and it happened to be a vehicle that had been used to train mechanics in fixing and servicing Beetles which were new to Australia at that time. So the car had been dismantled and reassembled a number of times. It was a good car for us so I have fond memories of it.

My own first car was an Austin A40 Somerset - it was a pathetic thing, no guts, brakes optional at times and if you went anywhere near 60 mph it seemed like it was about to fall to pieces. It probable was, everything shook and the ride was terrible. It finally rusted through and I traded it in.

Eventually I bought a Peugeot 404, light years ahead of the Austins I previously had. That started me on Peugeots, I graduated to the 504 fuel injected and eventually finished up with a 306 and then a 307. After being being treated very badly by Peugeot I had a test drive in a MarkV TDI with DSG and I only had to drive it for a few hundred meters to realize that Peugeot had done me a great favour and I bought my first VW. That got me to this forum.

Thanks for your replies Hillbilly and Team_v. It's good to know there are some here of a vintage to remember such ancient cars as an A70, too expensive for me as a first car. From the A40 I went on to an A95, that was some car in its day but I do remember driving along at quite a speed and being passed by a Peugeot 403 flying along. I went on to another A40, the little station wagon before getting into Morris 1100 and 1300 but then went for Peugeots which lasted till 2005 when I bought my first VW, a 103TDI Comfortline DSG but when I heard about the GT Sport TDI I immediately ordered one and probably got one of the first ones in the country. So I have had experience with the DSG and so far it's been all great.

I might just try to get along to an event - should be interesting.
