  • Black smoke, no power, no turbo

    Hi.

This has probably been done to death but I am going around in circles in the forums and with mechanics and there is information everywhere. I have a 2000 2.5 TDI T4 with 225,000kms and I am currently experiencing black smoke, no power and can only get to 90km/h. I have had problems previously and the VW dealer adjusted the fuel timing and it seemed to fix it. I have had intermittant limp home mode over the years sometimes with the coil light on in the dash lights, sometimes not. Simply feels like the turbo was not working.

Have checked the clenlyness of the air filter, MAF ensor, continuity of the MAF sensor to the ECU. Had the turbo checked by a turbo prseesional and they beleive the turbo mechanically is OK. Have replaced all the vac tube being very careful to replace the right ones in the right place. put a mechanical clamp ion the turbo inlet pie as it has expanded so that the fit was loose.

It suddenly happened on a long trip recently as opposed to happening slowly so something tells me that something went wrong on the settings or a mechanical or electrical connection has broken.

    Can anyone shed any light.

I have a VAG-COM Cable that I used to hook up cruise control a while ago but I cannot connect to it noe using ther Ross-Tech-lite Version 1.2. I got into the 'engine module doing the cruise but I cannot not connect now so I can't get any fault codes.

The motor is chipped but it does not make a difference if I dissconnect it.

    Thanks in advance

    Jezza

Just to add, the vehicle is well maintained, engine runs well mechanically, is smooth and isn't noisy.

I have had no response to my post, but I have solved the problem and thought I'd share the results for future reference.

After many hours and diagnosis, I had the ERG valve cleaned. My van now goes better than ever since I bought it with 130,000 km on the clock. It now has 230,000 km on it, and its back to rocket ship status!

There are plenty of links on other forums about what exactly an ERG valve is and does so I won't go into details here.

      Dub on!
