Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • MK5 - Which to buy?

    Hi guys,

Just had my beloved 96 mk3 classic (2.0L) written off by some muppet in a commodore. Drove it from 120,000km-170,000km over the last 2.5 years. Belted the absolute daylights out of it - loved every moment!

Looking at a few options for a new golf, budget is in the $16,000-$18,000 mark.

Have found a few tidy 2008 Volkswagen Golf V Pacific MY09 - that suit, namely 2008 Volkswagen Golf V Pacific MY09

Can someone point me in the right direction, I haven't driven any of the newer golfs (1.4Lt, 2.0 or TDI).

Have driven a 2008 Audi A3 (1.4L Turbo) with DSG (or equivalent) and although it drives nicely enough, the gearbox + 1.4lT or something amongst there was a little off putting.

Anyone with any experience driving 2.0L petrol and/or 1.4lt who could give me some advice?

Not after anything crazy fast, just something comfortable to take care of.

    Cheers!

I have a 2.0lt FSI sportsline and it is brilliant. Would be well within your price range for a good one. They have extremely comfortable seats and generates 110kw so its no slouch! Very good on fuel and get about 600klms a tank, possibly more if you drove it conservatively (i rev it out a bit as its a manual). Highly recommend it, its been a fantastic car

I was in the same place a while back, but looking at a Jetta. I found the 2.0 110kw Tiptronic was the way to go. The 118kw engines go pop, too many DSG issues, and the Turbo petrol was too much of a luxury as a daily family car.
Would have preferred a manual but the auto is nice enough in sport mode.

Go drive a few and see. You can try my Jetta if you like.
