Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Hello!

    Name is Trent,

Just joined up for a look at the forum and to do some research. I'm about to swap my 01 Holden Caprice V8 out for something totally different and the Golf GTI is currently at the top of my list.

as ive never owned a VW and only been impressed by my short test drive runs at work (German brand suspension wholesaler and fitter) I really don't know what I'm getting myself into. Hopefully I can be convinced and look forward to contributing to the forum in time.

    Cheers

    Hey there, Trent!

Welcome to the Forum man, there's a few things you'll need to know before buying.

People are going to tell you that the DSG (auto) transmission is just asking for trouble. There's been people in and out of Dealers with new transmissions and there's been people who've never had a single issue. As with any car, when you buy it, it's always got little quirks to be aware of. That's not to say that the Manual Box is bulletproof either.

Are you looking at buying one of the recent MkVI GTI's or one of the older MkV GTI's? They're very similar in terms of engines and interior styling, but the exterior is very different.

      Cheers for the reply!

Im looking at a MK6 as new and low Ks as possible (almost new without the price tag) and definitely DSG. Had a DSG Scirrocco at work and really enjoyed the short drive I had in it.

I've heard mixed reactions to reliability but as with anything posted on the Internet you take it with a grain of salt. I've spoken to a couple of reputable euro tuners that I deal with through work also and they had nothing bad to say apart from some of the engines being a bit hungry on oil. You get unlucky owners in any make of car I guess.

The VW dealer local to me told me they offer 5 yr warranty on the dsg box now so maybe the newer models are better.

Ahh so you've already got the knowledge and the feel, good to know! Best of luck with finding what you want.

Welcome once again to the forum!

I have to be honest, reading the DSG threads scare me a little. .
