Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • NSW Newbie GTI Mk 5

    Hi all,

I'm the new guy. I've owned a Golf GTI Mk 5 manual since new. No mods yet, but considering getting it power chipped. Don't know much about it, though, so was looking for some advice.

    Welcome to the forum.

Careful using the phrase powerchip-ped, there's a company of that name in Australia which has "history"

If you want your car tuning, there's lots of places to go.

Depending on where you are, I can supply you Custom-Code software.

Have a look through the forum sponsor section for the others.

    Cheers

Thanks for the heads up mate. I'm still on my "L" plates on this site, so appreciate the advice. I'm in NSW close to Newcastle. The power chip quote came from where I get my GTI serviced, which is the European Car Centre in Newcastle. They've offered to chip my car for approx. $1,000. They've said the BHP will go up to 198, which is a massive leap for a mk 5. Does that sound fair dinkum to you ? Cheers Mark

I hope they ment kw because a std one is 200Bhp from the factory. Most stage one tunes are around 180kw iirc

I reckon that will be KW not BHP, they make over 200 hp from the factory. Although I did see a Powerchip make 2 kw more than a standard car once.

They do make about that in KW when tuned.

What tuner do they use? Can't see anything on their web site.

There's other options that cost more and less than you have been quoted there.

Sorry boys, I mean't 147kW, 197 bhp as standard. Euro Car Centre told me they plug into a computer in Italy and the kW thumps up to 198. I'm not knowledgeable on this stuff ... as is obvious ... but my questions for you blokes are (a) is this really achieveable and more importantly, (b) is this increase in power manageable (linear) or does it suddenly cut in, wreck your back and root the engine ???

I was also told a more gentle option would be to get the valves cleaned. I do take a lot of short trips. Any thoughts on that option.

I apologise for being so un-technical. I just love driving a good car.
