  • First VW - T4 Caravelle - auto with no reverse gear!!

The excitement of my first T4 ... indeed my first VW! Heaps of room, drives beautiful and just soaks up the road ... but only when travelling forward!

Changed the ATF and filter ... and said goodbye to reverse gear in the process.

First symptoms were that when reverse was selected (motor) would load slightly, but upon acceleration go nowhere fast. Like as if the clutch was slipping or not fully engaged. Only the slightest motive force to the wheels .. enough to barely get you moving on smooth level concrete.

Now (12 hours later) there is nothing discernible when reverse is selected. Nothing at all ... revs just as if you were in neutral.

Am I looking at something inside the box or perhaps something electrical outside.

A friend of mine bought a T4 some years ago with an intermittent issue where reverse gear would drop out and it turned out to be a wire shorting out on the tray below! Not sure exactly which one though.

Looking at the harnesses that connect to front and rear of box and wondering whether there is some oil ingress. Considered getting a can of contact cleaner and just a whiff of compressed air.

Overall ... slow to engage into Drive form Neutral or Park or on release of brake pedal (two full seconds) and box changes a little harshly 1st to 2nd too. Other gears seem smooth. Drive forward, but not backward.

    Any ideas?

    On a 2002 2.5 Tdi Caravelle with 240,000km

ATF was Gulf Western SynTrans which according to their online spec and the retailer's advice is VW 052 162 compatible. Level is spot on!

Got it cheap and am open to spending the big bucks to get me a mickey mouse reconditioned box but need to establish if the fault lays elsewhere.
