Lurked for years, only just registered.

From Melbourne, Currently looking for a VW daily drive as my other project is currently 'off the road' due to mods.
I'm definitely an Air cooled guy, but as I am after a daily, I must steer in the reliability and comfort direction (hard for me).

So on the table are Mk IV Bora's (V5 or V6 4mo) or MkIV Golfs (GTI's).

Welcome. Read up on all the common problems MKIVs have so you can talk the price down. Simple things to look for and fix: coil packs, hard to open trunk/boot, power window regulators, leaky sunroofs, MAFs, busted arm rest latch, busted glove box, there's a long list, but most aren't too hard to fix if you have the know how. I can get the car scanned to see what codes it's throwing can also help. If its a 4mo, do some slow figure 8's with the windows down and make sure you don't hear any grinding.

Look for signs that the car hasn't been previously moded: rolled fenders, non OEM parts, gashes on the under carriage. Try and get an interior that hasn't been hacked at (them parts ain't cheap). Generally modded cars sell for less than OEM. If it has altezza tail lights, hood vents or gills, RUN!

Cheers for the tips mate, i know of most of these, i dont know much about haldex's so thats my only weak point when looking, all i can do is the tight figure 8's and hope its quiet and smooth haha.

how do you scan the car for error codes?

You'll need an odb II cable and software.
If you get the car checked out by a shop that deals with VWs, they'll have VAGCOM and be able to read them. I bought a cable off of eBay and can read codes, but can't remove them. The port is located just below the stero HU, above the ash try. Small panel that slides down.

I don't know to much about the haldex and am looking into that also for my 4mo.
