  • Hi guys. About to buy this MK2 GTI. Give me your thoughts :)

Hi guys, longtime lurker first time poster.

I am a graphic design student and downhill skateboarder, have always wanted a gti since I was very young, and stoked I can now start off my gti journey.

I had been looking at a very decent mk4 gti that alot of you may know around here if your in melb. Once I added up the costs with insurance etc it was not looking good. Its my last year of uni and decided i would wait until next year when in a full time job to afford the gti of my dreams.

I have found a mk2 gti on carsales that I went and inspected today. I was very very impressed and agreed on what would be 4,200. this would include the extra parts he has such as replacement seat, however apart from a tear on the right driver side seat the seats underneath the covers were immaculate. The only mods he has done are the exhaust, black wheels, aftermarket speakers, lowered, cant remember the name of the exhaust but sounds and goes very well. Everything has been done very tastefully and can tell alot of care has been taken, with recent service done by volkswerk

The gearbox was smooth I had no issues going into second as some people have had, started perfectly, idled well and didnt hear any rattles. You can see the rest of the carsales post here.

Sorry about the essay but I am very happy with what i saw today and was hoping to get myself a good, nimble good to learn manual in introduction into later mk's in 1 and a half/ 2 years time.
    Thanks for your time, matt.

sorry in advance about the accidental double post.

will be calling volkswerke tomorrow to inquire about its history, and will have a pre purchase check done on her to let me know whats up.
the owner brought it here from perth at 118,000, and now has 136,000. the only thing worrying me is that it has no service history from the previous owner, only what he has had done since.

Looked at this myself mate, I too thought this was a clean example, but was a little suss on the low KM's for the age of the car, his back story on the car was interesting too, but it drove well and was super clean.

Good luck with the buy, let us know if you get it.

Getting Dean from Volkswerke to do a pre purchase on her on tuesday to see what the situation is under the hood and whatnot. Will be happy to put a bit of money into it to get it to a nice daily driver to work only 7k away, and weekend drives up the vic alpine region.

Anybody else think this a good buy?

          all mk2's are good buys

as long as it runs well and you can select all the girls it should be fine. They run forever (well, most of the time lol)

Haha cheers mate. I'm being realistic and it is a 21 year old car. But the body is very, very clean and from what I could tell from driving had no problems idling, gearbox was smooth etc. Hopefully the pre purchase check tomorrow comes up clean.
I wouldn't mind spending about a grand or so getting it to run reliably as a daily (10km a day).

Im thinking coilovers, bigger brakes, retune it, replace worn engine parts etc.
            Any reviews of volkswerke?

                Thanks for the reply mate.
Wow 70km a day, that makes me feel pretty good, I won't be driving it that much everyday.

Is that oil pressure switch problem going to be much prob/$ to fix?

Won't be able to get the pre purchase check done tomorrow, so I am booking in Volkshome in Thomastown for Sat as that is the only time the owner will be available.

Does anyone know if Dean at Volkswerke have alot of mk2 parts around? Like smoked rear light clusters, replacement chin spoiler lip things like that? Or is it worth just searching around the net scavenging where I can?

not sure what he has left, I imported my rear lights from the uk
but I still need a chin spoiler, seems like they always go!
Also, beware of ordering them off Ebay, I order a cheap one from china, it was NOT a GTI one. they sent me a GL one

Not sure how much a new oil switch is? I took one off my old engine.

I have had a mk2 in my life for the last 15 years, in fact my first mk2 is still running in the uk and with the original engine!!! (1.8 KR 16v)

                      Hey mate.
Stoked on the pre purchase results, just a few things here and there as you can imagine need doing.

                      According to the invoice...
Needs new front discs and pads.
Front tyres need changing (Owner is giving me two pretty fresh tyres)
Small exhaust leaks present at muffler joins.
R/H outer tie rod end boot split and joint worn.
Rocker cover sweating oil. Tightentened bolts, will need a steam clean.
Windscreen has a fair few specks within it, prob needs replacing.
Ac is not very cold. However the heater and ac do work, will hopefully just need a regas.
                      Inside rear boot trim missing.
Has the timing belt been changed? (Owner changed it at 118k when he got it, car is now 130k. Owner is also giving me another timing belt)
                      Drivers side door handle worn.
Drivers side seat has movement, slider guides are worn/missing.
Exhaust/downpipe rubs against power steering rack, only noticeable on hill inclines with lots of power. (Will take to exhaust specialist pretty soon after purchasing to get it looked at, volkswerke dont like to play with aftermarket exhausts which I thought was weird.)

So yeah, a few things here and there, do you guys think that is anything major?
The body itself is in great condition, just needs a good detailing and will me be mint. Lurking for some front chin spoilers and smoked rear lights, as well as how to fix/replace a bit of cracking/flaking about 4cm worth behing the rear wiper in the textured black seal that runs around the rear windshield.

What do you guys reckon? A good buy at $4,200?
What would you recommend doing to it to keep it running reliably for an everyday (10KM) drive?
It has been nicely lowered, but looking at a good set of coilovers in the future. Is it worth getting the ECU flashed in the MK2's?

Cheers for the help, much appreciated.

all sounds fine, mk2 AC is not great TBH
Sounds all normal for a car that age

Are they Oz motorsport wheels? The pic is a bit blurry and my eyes aren't the best. If so then they are pretty expensive.

Sounds good, as i said, i looked at it too, and thought it was reasonably tidy and tight all round, but i couldn't be rooted getting it checked out.

By the sounds of the report you got back, nothing major, general Mk2 things, all cheap to repair.

Looks like a buy too me, all you research has been done.

Yeah mate pretty set on it. Getting the insurance done tomorrow, and will probably pick it up tomorrow night.
I don't know the make of the wheels exactly, I just know that I love them and will come up mint as will the rest of the care after a good detail job, will post pics once I buy and once I get her detailed.

The insurance worked out to $650 fully comp, 22yr old male, rating 1, have parents with AAMI and I have been with AAMI for 5 years and never claimed, so worked out to be the cheapest I could find.

Hey xpeesx, anything you think I should work on to tighten her up?

God I can't wait to get her home and have some fun
