Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Hi everyone - new to the forum

    Hi all

I'm contemplating purchase of a Golf GTI (I think I'll wait for the new model) but I wanted to participate as I have never owned a VW before and I have heard through rumours that there are a few issues with the GTI (e.g. DSG problems). Thought I would ask for advice here whether GTI would be a good choice or if I should be looking at other VW models. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum mate! VW's are great cars, you'll love whatever you pick.

My piece of advice re the MK7 GTI would be that a) you'll be waiting a while, as they will sell FAST. I'd say you'd be looking at at LEAST 2nd quarter next year (maybe later) when you'll be able to just walk into a dealer and get floor stock. b) if you're worried about problems then maybe the first year model of any new car isnt the best thing to get, as all the new tech and systems usually have a few bugs that need ironing out. However if yuo picked up a MK6 GTI for a good price you'd be laughing.

    Anyway, welcome!

    Previous Ride: Polo GTI MY2012|DSG|RNS510|Shadow Blue|Lenso GF7 18” rims

Thanks Lemonskin that's some great advice! So do you think if I waited to buy the MK6 when the MK7 are out that I would be able to buy MK6 at an even better price??? I would not mind that! The cheapest a dealer could sell to me was for about $45000.

For sure. Even if a dealer doesn't have one you could buy near-new as I did. The previous model always drops in value when the new model comes in.

Welcome.. have a read of the price thread in the mk6 section to get a guide on what you should be paying, some people are doing some very sharp deals which likely would not be possible with the mk7, not to mention waiting lists and the risk of niggles with new models. Depends on how keen you are on having the newest model. I used to care, now I'm more than happy running with my mk6 for a while yet.

As for issues, yes there are some, but most people have no problems at all and if you spend time researching alternatives you'll quickly find unhappy owners of pretty much any car.
