Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Golf 118 TSI owner

Long time lurker here, and have found posts here to be extremely helpful.

As per the title, I currently have a Golf 118 TSI. Whilst I've enjoyed the car, like a fair number of other people, I've had my fair share of issues with the vehicle. In fact, it's currently sitting at the service centre for piston repairs

I believe it was built in May 2010, picked it up in August 2010.

Throughout this period, have encountered low engine oil (in between regular services at every 15000 at the dealer) about 3-4 times. Repeatedly been told it's "normal" for this to occur, with 1L/10,000kms. Last year, the clutch plate was replaced as well as some work on the crankshaft. With the latest lot of issue with the engine, there was smoke coming out of the exhaust as well as the catalytic converter warning light flashing, which according to the owner manual is due to engine misfiring. Also now been told that the current work on the piston will resolve the engine oil consumption, which we previously was advised as "normal"...
