Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Hello from a VAG family.

    Hello,

This is my first time here so I will bore you with some history. My lovely wife brought a Mk4 Golf many years ago and its been a wonderful car. She is very sensible, so it hasn't really been modified, just serviced regularly and generally looked after.

A few years following, upgraded to an Audi and have been very much enjoying that also. The Audi journey has not been as smooth as I had hoped, and this saw me sign up on a couple of Audi forums where I have received a lot of support which has been fantastic. There really is a good following of enthusiasts for both VW and Audi.

Both my wife and I remain great fans of the brand, in so many ways they are just "better", even comparing our cars to brand new Ford's, Holdens and Toyotas, nothing has the same quality finish and attention to detail. It really is all the little things that make a big difference.

Later in the year, we hope to upgrade the Mk4 for a shiny new Mk7, so I hope to glean some hot gossip and reviews of the new car here.

Whilst I'm not a mechanic, I have fumbled my way through some back yard engine work and the occasional transplant when I was younger. Now-a-days I tend to let the dealers do most of the work, but as an enthusiast, I do like to check all the basics myself from time to time.

This has lead me to purchase a Ross-Tech cable which works in both cars (hooray!). This actually leads to another reason for signing up here. The little Golf has a hard fault which keeps coming back. It should be pretty straight forward, fault is as follows:
17834 - EVAP Purge Valve (N80): Open Circuit

However I'm not sure where the purge valve is located on the golf ? I'm hoping its as simple as an un-pluged connector after the timing belt was done, but I wont shy away if its a straight replacement with a new part.

I did ask this question on OzAudi, but didnt get an answer, so I figured that wasn't really the right place, and VWWatercooled is where the Golf experts hang out.
