Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • New member.....not so new to VW !

    Hello all, my first post.
Not yet an owner, but in the throws of doing the research with a view to purchase soon.
Im looking at getting myself a 2013 Tiguan, 103TDI.
Love the look and they drive so well, was sold on the first drive (i had just hoped out of test driving a Forester too at the time, probably something to do with it).
The only sticking point I have is with the transmnission.........
I've always been a lover of the manual transmission, however after test driving a model with DSG, Im awfully tempted !
Only problem is I have read A LOT of negative feedback concerning the DSG and its reliability.
I have also notices a lot of negativity with VW, which I don't know whether its justified and am wondering whether the whole DSG beatup is due to the haters of VW.
If I were to shell out on a DSG equiped vehicle, am I looking at a fair chance Im going to be seeing the inside of my local VW Service centre a lot ?
Other than that, Im a sold man on the Tiguan.......
    Steve

You have to remember that the only people who complain are the ones who have a problem.
Rarely will people write stories about how great the car is and how they have had no issues so you aren't really getting a fair snapshot of the issues in the brand.

the DSG in the tiguan is meant to be the stronger variety which i am yet to hear any issues with.

I've had the DSG for 18 months and just shy of 40,000km without a problem.

You do however have to learn how to drive it (or at least understand how it drives) so that you can manually shift gears on the odd occasion that it selects the "wrong" gear.

As long as you're aware of that you can pretty much drive it as a more efficient "auto" 99% of the time.

A few of us have installed flappy paddle steering wheels which in my opinion is actually the best way to drive the DSG. Much easier than taking your hands off the wheel and shifting on the stick.

Thanks guys, can be difficult to get an accurate view with all that is said about the DSG gearbox.
Is there any other issues that repeatedly come up on the Tiguan ? Most if not all models of cars these days have their gremlins, my other option was a Madza CX-5, but with the horrendous oil-dilution problems they are encountering, that vehicle was soon struck off the list. Does the 103Tdi engine have any bugs, in particular with the effect of the DPF ?

Re: New member.....not so new to VW !

We have 3 VW's with the DSG in family also had Mk5 Golf TDI with the DSG and never had any issue with them. Don't always trust the media, they can be biased.

The transmission problems, however are very common in today's automotive world. The VW have 5 years drive train warranty now and I'm not sure if there are many DSG's that have failed after 100k km?
