Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Hi all,

I am one of those who succumbed to the ads and bought a 118TSI with 7sp DSG.

Now that I am facing all sorts of issues I need some help - can soemone please recommend a decent place in Sydney to get a dynometer reading to see when maximum power/torque is becoming available?

    Thanks for your help

What sort of problems are you having

Perhaps driving it a bit more sedately may help

The brochure for your car will have the required information. At least mine has.

I have been driving it sedately for the 11 months that I have had it out of the 15 that I have owned it for.

Gearbox replaced after 6,000klm and 6 months - with new gearboxcar now creeping rather then accelarating at intersections/roundabouts/changing speed zones etc.
Door locks failing as I am driving along - had to do my best to not fall out.
All manner sof warning lights intermittently displaying on dash.

Shall I go on? The brochure for my car has the required info that was correct when I purchased it - does not seem to be the case anymore and this is why I am seeking the dyno to confirm what I beleive is happening.

Power figures quoted in the brochure are at the engine, not the wheels.

So unless you're planning to remove the engine at your own expense and have it run on an engine dyno, again at your expense, the whole exercise would be pointless.

Is there not some way of determining the engine output from the output at wheels, give or take?
If the answer to the Monty Hall problem was 50/50, the contestant, on average, would win the car 50% of the time simply by sticking with their original guess...but you can only win a one-in-three guessing game 33.33% of the time so it can't be 50/50, can it?

There isn't a definitive % loss between engine and wheels.
You also have to consider that the power and torque figures are variable over different runs and can change with temperature and even tyre choice (slipping on the rollers etc)

Just a quick question - did you buy the car brand new or dealer used - if yes then vw dealer?

The dealer should have given a warranty with the car - i suggest try to complain to the hills before its too late. Ensure the matter goes to head office etc etc .. i've heard of people receiving a new car if its still under the factory warranty.
