Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • First time VW owner in Brisbane: '78 MK1 two-door.

    Hello mates!

Been a long time stalker of this forum, but I now finally have my first VolksVargen. I purchased this little beauty off my mate Mike (Mike1_Golf on here I believe), and he arrived last week. I have not been able to touch him due to the horrible weather, but hope to have him on the road within four weeks. Please let me know of any events and VW clubs that are up around this way . I really only know of ClubVeeDub (do they have a Brisbane arm?) in Sydney when I used to live there.

Anyway, my car history has been predominantly Nissan. I have owned about six R31s with various powerplants in the RB range, an MX83 Cressida with 1JZ, and just sold my S13.

Many of you may know this car from out and about in Sydney, and when it was recently up for sale. I told Mike months and months ago that I would buy it, and I am thankful he held onto it for me!

The Golf is essentially stock, other than upgraded Weber carbie and coilovers all round. The gearbox is also a rebuilt Diesel item.

My only plans really are to fit new wheels which are already in my possession, and have him predominately as a weekender. I hope to keep him for a while (I rarely keep cars longer than 10 months) and fix him up over a long period of time; much like what my friend Ryan/HuH on the forums has done.

So, good to meet you all, and hope to see you about at some shows!

I would love to have a project like this but unfortunately no garage space dictates my current car situation but well done on the purchase. I owned a Citi Golf CTI when I lived in South Africa which is as close to a MK1 I ever got - Volkswagen Citi Golf - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Loved it to bits, did a whole heap of engine and suspension upgrades to her. Aircon would cut out at lights and my wife hated her but I loved her. Let us know how the project goes.

    Cheers

Haha yes, I am familiar with those; they were produced for some crazy amount of time, weren't they? Like late 2000s? So cool. And thanks!

I'll keep that in mind, GTI. I am undecided whether I want to get them widened or keep them for stock rollers. I wouldn't have a clue how much they are worth, either. The white walls are now brown walls.

Glad someone who is going to take care of this has it now.

Best you open a thread in the MK1 section.

          Welcome.

Welcome aboard mate. It's good to see another MK1 Golf stay in the VWWC family

            Any plans for a respray?

Thanks! Not this year at least. I am heading overseas at the end of the year, so fun money is going into... other fun savings. Haha.

Should I just copy/paste the first post in a new thread in the MK1 section?
