  • Just picked Golf R - luv it!!!!!!

    Hi guys

Picked up my brand new golf r 3 days ago and pretty happy so far. Fair bit of turbo lag from standstill but know that can be sorted with tune etc....... pretty keen on Viezu.

I had mk v GTI w/ APR stag 2 from 06 to 09 and then went to the dark side for a while ( ford g6e turbo - 300+ rwkw) and missed the golf the whole time. Really feels like I have come home.

pretty happy to see Aus based forum now - was US based vortex last time I thought to look. Already recognise a few user names from the vortex

Well that's me ...... Speak soon

      Well done Marcus

May not be turbo lag, these don't really have turbo lag

      Do you have DSG ?

If so, it's the throttle response and DSG

A tune will reduce the hesitation/sluggish behaviour even in manual

        Thanks Candyman

Yes I do have DSG and it is a little frustrating when you move of at part throttle and the G/box races up through the gears. Have found myself without stonk on tap.

Either way tune should fix it.

Candyman's must be a gem. I have generous amount of lag, under about 2000rpm. I can highly recommend a DSG tune, it transforms the way the box behaves.

Drive it in manual mode or S mode

Drive it with "gusto" if you must use D mode, it will learn your driving style and adjust, even D mode. Keep the throttle on in D mode.

Don't get a DSG tune. A good ECU tune can change torque limits on the unit which can help the DSG shifts

You will find most if not all tuners suggest waiting on the ECU tune until the first service

Some interesting thoughts there Candyman. I picked up my new DSG R last Friday and I know exactly what the OP means with the hesitation off the line, but I did put it down to the DSG. Why would you suggest not going for the DSG tune? D mode drives me nuts with it's constant shifting and low revs, but S mode is like Mr Hyde to D's Dr Jekyll with it constantly revving out and downshifting to keep it in the 3000rpm range. Saying that, I prefer manual anyway!
I was intending on doing an ECU flash after a couple of thousand K's, but not sure I can wait 15k!

Get an ECU tune first - a good tune will resolve most of the issues

Be aware that the DSG tunes are easily detectable and DSGs do fail.

Wait until the first service to ensure any warranty issues due to the ECU and DSG are resolved before modifying

That is actually the advice of most good tuners

ECU tunes are also detectable. My advice from first hand experience is, get a DSG tune. I relate totally to what you are talking about.

Sport mode is unusable in normal urban driving, but after a DSG tune, mine changes up to 5th gear at around 58k/hr. The changes are much faster and match engine speed and load better than prior to the tune. For me, it was a no brainer and a decision I don't regret taking.

Try to find someone in your part of the world who has has their DSG tuned and get some one on one advice.

My point about ECU tune vs TCU tune is that engines rarely fail but DSGs do

Get a tune first and see how you feel about the car as an ECU tune, a good one, most definately does improve the "lag" off the mark

                        Oops

I seem to have inadvertently started a rather robust discussion !!!

Has anyone out there had exposure to viezu tunes, including what they market as a "light DSG tune"? I am still not sure whether they tune the DSG as part of the ECU Tuning process or whether they actually plug into the DSG somehow.

                        Any advice would be appreciated.

P.S 15k seems a long, long way off...... not sure if I will be able to resist the urge (or lack thereof) for that long

Light DSG tune is modification in the ECU only and does not touch the DSG.

From all reports the Viezu tune on the R's is pretty awesome (just check the Motor mag hot tuner results) and so are the deals. The Christmas special that they were running included tune, 3" DP and CAI for under $2k. That is seriously good value. Or add $1k and get the full TBE.

Anyway suggest talking to Simon @ Viezu and he can recommend when the earliest to put a tune on your car - definitely not when it's being run in though. And then it's up to you as to how long you wait to see if there are any warranty issues that come up before tuning.

I'd reckon that if you got through 5,000km you should be pretty right - but suggest getting it fully checked over before doing anything that has the potential to void your manufacturer warranty.

What is the lag like in Sport or in Manual?

You can't really use lag and sport mode in the same sentence because there isn't any but it can be a bit manic as you need to be really moving for the DSG to shift into fourth in S mode, which means you spend most of your time in third or less. You have rapid forward motion on tap but you are always carrying heaps of revs.

In manual it is up to you. I have been caught in in the "wrong" gear in manual on occasion whilst not paying full attention in which case it can be slow to get going but tap the left hand paddle a coupla' times and you are off like the proverbial.

All in all no real complaints to speak of coz it is a fast car out of the box (pardon the pun) in anyone's language, but given VW has to cater for the masses in turns of the tune they apply out of the factory it stands to reason improvements can be had by way of an aftermarket tickle.
And ain't I looking forward to that........
