Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Excellent choice Craig I'm impressed with decisions like that. Hope to see you at a meet in the future if I'm ever in Melbourne. Are you after DSG or Manual? Yes, it is a bit nose heavy, but that is a 6 potter under the bonnet, not a sewing machine. It will take the rough treatment and come back for more. Just don't look at the fuel gauge when the right foot is buried into the firewall. this is not a car for economical driving. BUT, you should easily get below 8.5l/100kms avge on highway/freeway cruising at the speed limit.

      Advice:

      1) Good to be looking for a car under 80,000 kms. The 08 is slightly different to the 07 with a couple of features, but nothing major.

      2) A 3 door simply has a little more street cred whilst losing out on the practicality of the 5 door. Just need to select for your lifestyle. The 3 door is also maginally lighter.

      3) Picking whether it is DSG or Manual will come down to various factors with you. If you are doing alot of city driving, then a DSG can be more convenient, but a manual is much more of a drivers car. There are many stories about DSG gearboxes, some valid, some not so. You should think of the DSG as a clutchless manual rather than a true automatic. People often comment about the jerkiness of the gearbox, but this is just one of it's querks. If it is unusually clunky or jerky, then there may be issues with the mechatronics unit, but best to ensure this gets checked before you buy.

      4) Your minor services happen every 15,000kms, and should appear in the car's log book. Someone who has looked after their car will tell you they have changed the oil more regularly at perhaps 5,000km intervals. The cost of most of the minor services (if done through VW) range from about $300-500.

      5) There is a major service at 60,000kms. It is important that you sight this in the log book. And if it is a DSG car, it is important that the gearbox was done also. If it has not been done, this would be an immediate alarm bell as a possible reason not to buy. The 60,00km service can range from anywhere from about $1,200 to $2,000

The Mk5 R32 behaves alot like a GT car, and highways and twisty roads are what it prefers. So yes, take it out on the weekends and stretch it's legs a bit. They are well built and robust, and are designed to be driven.

      Hope this all helps.

Thanks for all your tips Robbie, I did actually just put a deposit down on one yesterday which was a 2008 with only 62,000km that was in great condition and just had the DSG serviced as well as its normal service. The car drove very smooth and gave it a few squirts, responded really well. Love the noise they make!

The car has been well taken care of, and i really couldn't say no to it. It also has a sunroof, which was a must type of thing for me. It's a 5 door, as I need something very practical for my every day job and university.

I pick it up next weekend hopefully which will be the long weekend, so i might hit up Great Ocean Road, and really take it for a test.

I actually am coming from a modified 1990 Mazda MX-5, which had ITB's, ECU, Coilovers, Full exhaust, Rollcage, Lip Kit, Roof Spoiler, Locked Diff, Bracing, Heavy Duty Clutch and more.

Was a fun car to have, but it was very impractical and provided a lot of unwanted attention as it was very loud and would leave many flames and pops on deceleration.
