Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • QLD Hi Guys

    Hey everyone,

My name is Tim and i have purchased (early last year) an 197 MK1 golf for a bit of a fun project.

It is currently in parts in my garage and am slowly fixing it up. The last owner had it as a p plate car and was looking very, very sad. I have now fixed a majority of rust and ripped all the insides out. I have also taken the engine out and tidied the engine bay and got rid of the awful yellow painted parts. As of this weekend i am starting to put the old thing back together.

I shall post some pictures tonight.

I shall be posting quite abit i think for parts and opinions, and hope to see people out and about!

    Thanks guys,

    Tim

Nice mate. Mind sharing where you picked it up from?
What are your plans for it? Tidy up and daily? New paint? etc..

Picked it up in Brissie here last year. In the long run i shall turn it into a track car, but I am just making it a fun car for now until i have more money for an engine transplant. As i said i have taken the rust out and the engine and am tidying the engine bay up to put the original engine back in. I have got coilovers ordered but still have to get it all up and running before those go in.

Most of the interior shall stay out but i shall be keeping the seats and carpets. Thats about it.

I shall be painting it in a satin black for now until i choose the colour i want. There is just to many to choose from. lol.

I am thinking of selling my other weekend car my XR5 turbo to maybe fund this a bit more, because with the company car and missus' car, it doesnt get driven much.

I shall post a current photo of the golf later, when i have one.

and a quick pick of the XR5

Found it on gumtree...about 2 streets away from where i live. Didn't cost much due to what has to be done. The brakes don't work, rust, had water pooling in it and the dash is absolutely crap. Anyone know where i can get a dash from? cant find one anywhere.

And the xr5 is 2010. It was the last new white one in Australia.
