Hi Guys,

Having a German missus and wanting Japanese cars just doesn't cut it so here I am to work out what's what on the VW side. She had a single cam 8v two door auto, probably a 98 when we were in Germany and I used to enjoy banging it off the rev limiter at 190km/h downhill on the autobahn.

Will most likely look at an R36 Wagon or GTI. The parent's in law have just bought a 2012 Golf GTI with DSG and I like it.

I have to sell my C class first but am up for swaps too so will post it up here in the for sale section later in case anyone's looking at going the other way.

Except for the lower power output than my c, although im hoping a few discreet mods will change that!

Is it true the manuals are the safer option if buying out of warranty?

The R36 is DSG-only, so you've no choice there. The 6-speed DSG shared by the R36 and Golf GTI is a proven 'box, although the mechatronic unit that controls the gearbox can fail at any time, and replacement can be expensive. Like anything without a warranty, you do run a certain risk, and arguably that risk is greater than with a standard manual gearbox, but I'd say as long as you buy a good car with a healthy DSG, odds are you'll be fine. I love the DSG in my GTI.

Thanks Adam. I thought I'd seen a few r36s on carsales that were listed as manuals Will have to double check? I love the dsg in Mt father in laws gti though so a manual would have to be a nice mechanism to swing that way.
