Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • NSW Former VAG driver

    Hi all,

My Name is Daniel and am from Sydney. I'm not new to the VAG scene and was a major contributor to the OZaudi forum from the day it started with the user name A4PLAY.

Growing up I was a Holden fan (please forgive me) My first car was a VN HSV LS.

After many years of ownership I gave the car to my brother and bought myself a 2000 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro and thus began my love affair with VAG + AWD.

I had bought it and told myself that it was going to stay standard but I just couldn't help myself. I ended up doing the following.
K04-015 Turbo, TT/S3 225HP injectors, GFB Diverter valve, GIAC chip (boosting to 20psi), Samco Turbo inlet hose, APR Snub mount, Mod Shack Boost Machine, Boost Guage, Dieselgeek Short Shifter, RS4 grille, Sach Sports suspension, 18x8.5 - 1/16 Carlsson copy rims, Stainless steel brake line.

Boy was it fun to drive.

In 2008 I sold the A4 (got married and wife couldn't drive manual) and got myself a C180K with Sports pack - which I then sold in 2013.

During the same time I went back to my childhood dreams and bought myself a project car. It was a 1983 VH Commodore SL/E and spent 4 years slowly piecing it together.

In May 2013 I became a Dad for the first time and realised that i'd rather spend my time with my son rather than tinkering with the Holden, plus the Holden is not as classy as a Euro so I sold the car and we bought a VW Passat Alltrack (see, told you I like AWD) as the family hauler.

Now I'm in the process I've finding a companion to sit along side the Alltrack in the form of a MK6 Golf R. Of course the intention is to slightly modify this car so I'll keep you all posted.

Finally managed to get my R and as all my cars never remain standard I thought I'd amend this post as a diary of my car and it's development during my time of ownership.

Picked up a MY11 united Grey Golf R last Monday (03/02/14) and am absolutely loving it.
It only has 18,000kms, 6months warranty and almost all the options.

    Standard Factory List
    DSG transmission
    United Grey
    Leather seats
    Black Headlights
    19 inch Talladega rims
    Sunroof
    RSN510 Headunit
    Media device interface
    Dynaudio
    Adaptive Chassis Control

My Plans are to keep the car as a daily driver but of course extract more power from the engine and update the suspension/brakes for the occasional track day.

Here is a photo of the car the week I got it and after a good detail inside and outside by me.

A few things to personalise the car and welcome it home

    His and Hers 4Motion

Fist modification sitting at home awaiting fitment is the Volant air intake and Tarmac heat shield.

Also researching what DP to go with and once the Easter sales are on it'll be off to get tuned. Seeing that Muller and Muller is just 10 mins from home I am probably going to go with APR for tuning.

Now with the intake. I was going to hold off until the car was tuned to install it but would I see any improvement or notice a difference in intake noise if I changed it over beforehand?

Nice Golf R Daniel. Don't see too many around these days on the road in UG. Great choice on modifications to come.

Would love to put some LCD headrests in the Alltrack.

The Golf R went in to the panel shop today to get the rear bar resprayed. While it's in I asked for the front quarter panel be buffed to get rid of the "ghosting', have it hand polished and the front bar touched up.

When they took the front bar off they found this.

Silly me forgot to check the front reinforcement bar when I inspected the car. Luckily I got the seller down on price (Saved $6K from what he was asking) to budget for a front and rear bar respray plus other bits. I knew it had been in a knock up front (not from the seller disclosing it) but didn't realise this had been bent. Luckily it's noting too bad. Air-con hoses are untouched and a new reinforcement bar is $400 (although there's one on eBay in Melb for $260)

Got the car back today and it looks just about like it came off the sales floor. Also installed some Manic dsg paddle extensions.

              Very happy with it!

Finally, I managed to find some time and install my volant intake. Hardest part installing this was taking the original engine cover off (I was sure something was going to snap) and the spring clamp that connects the original intake to the turbo.
I must say, I'm impressed with the fitment and looks and am certain that the car pulls a little harder than before too. The intake noise sounds standard at idle although the engine is a lot noisier with the cover removed. But when you start accelerating and making boost it sounds like it's going suck up the passenger headlight.
                Very happy with the product.

I also went to speak to Paul at Muller and Muller and told him I'll be back for stage 1 programming when the Easter sale is on. can't wait for this!

Car is booked in this Wednesday for it's tune. Going with APR!

                  Can't wait!

Also getting 2 new tyres for the front. Going with Yokahama Advan Sport V105s. I've heard mixed reviews about them but the rears are fairly new so just want the front to match the rear tyres.

                    Done!

                    Boy it's quick!
Can feel it in the mid to high revs especially. Power comes on very smooth and you're at 100kmh (where the speed limit permits) in no time.

                    Very happy.
