Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • VIC My First GTI

    Hi All!,

Just changed over my cars (due to a new addition to the family). I had a 2008 Golf TDI Pacific (wife's car) and an 2011 Audi A5 Sportback (my car!). Now we have a Volvo XC60 D5 Polestar (for the kid)... and after recently selling my Audi, I just had to get something fun to drive (that was also cheaper than my Audi - wife's request).

At first I wondered about another Golf, having had many DSG issues with the TDI. But one drive of the GTI and I was hooked! Exceeded my expectations. Within 3 days of test driving a second hand one I had a new one parked in my garage!

Long story short, i've joined the GTI brotherhood - MY13 Candy White, Leather, Sunroof, 18" Detroits, Park Assist. I've only put 108 klms on it so far, so going to wait a bit longer before I really start 'driving' it.

Have to say, very disappointed that you can't retrofit genuine Xenon's and rear LEDs without hassle. Features wise, the car is pretty raw unless you pay through the nose.

Now - what mods to get... hmmmm. Thinking CAI to start? Great site this is... lots of very informative views.

WOW.. this post went longer than I expected! http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/foru...cons/icon6.png

Congrats mate. First mod usually performed is an ECU software update - best bang for buck.

LED tails are also fairly easy to retrofit, just need access to a VCDS cable to make coding changes. User here called ozram knows someone at a German dealer that sends them down so send him a PM or search eBay (lots of options to retrofit available on eBay btw)
Some say he was the Stig... all we know is that he drives a VW Transporter.

Cheers guys... so starts my journey. I've never really been a big fan of modding, but the GTI is just asking for it!

Will share my experiences along the way!

Welcome SAINIside...you will enjoy this forum and find most people very willing to give information and help.

I have been driving a 2011 118TSi for over a year but I am looking to sell it and get a GTI, so I am hoping to join guys like you with GTIs.

BTW, my wife has a 2009 TDI Pacific DSG which we got a Bluefin for in May and it now drives like a dream...what problems did your wife have with her DSG?

            DWA58 you'll love the GTI!

The DSG in the TDI was very clunky, especially when changing down. It would clunk heavily into 2nd and 1st. Luckily just before it was out of warranty they agreed to replace the entire transmission. After about 4 months out of warranty problem came back - replaced the mechatronics unit. Sadly it never quite got rid of the clunkiness.

Not off to the best start in the GTI. Seems I have that waste gate rattle problem when accelerating. Booked in to get it fixed on Monday. Hope i don't have any more problems as I really want my GTI to be a keeper!
