Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Hi All,

I'm originally from the UK and have had a username here for a while since 2010 when I spent nearly a year in Sydney. Earlier this year I migrated permanently to the Gold Coast and now that I am starting to look at getting another VW (well my daily drive is a 2005 2K Caddy 1.6) I thought it was about time I introduced myself.

    I'm 25 and have had a long list of VW's from my first car (Mk1 1.3 driver, at the age of 14!), Mk2 Polo Coupe S, Mk3 Driver, Mk4 Polo 1.6, Audi A3 1.9 TDI 110.

    The ones worth elaborating on..

    Mk1 1.8 8v (150bhp)
    Larger Audi 80 Throttle Body
    Supersprint Exhaust
    Ashley 4-1 Manifold
Piper 285 cam (rare development profile)
TSR Pack C Cylinder Head (larger intake and exhaust valves)
    Ausi 80 256mm Brake Conversion
    Koni SSK Suspension Kit
    Eibach Rear ARB
    Powerflex Suspension Bushes
    Quaife LSD
    15"Oettinger Wheels

Mk2 16v (RHD, bought in Germany, rare non-sunroof model)
    2.0 16v ABF Engine Conversion
    Corrado G60 Sebring Wheels
    Powerflex Suspension Bushes

    Mk3 16v (172bhp)
    Corrado VR6 Speedline Wheels
    Eibach Pro Kit Suepension
    Eibach ARB
    Powerflex Suspension Bushes
    BMC CDA Intake

    Mk1 1.8 16v (205bhp)
    Lots...

The red Mk1 track car was the last to go late in 2010 having started life as a Mk1 1.3 Driver nearly 10 years previous, this was replaced by a Honda Integra Type R (DC2) which is a car I've always wanted since they were released in 1998 and was great as it could be used as a daily driver and also for track days and trips to the Nurburgring. I've still got the car stored in the UK but as it's not worth shipping over to AU I'm planning to sell it soon and use the cash to buy a weekend/project car here.

I must admit I'm very undecided, I would love another DC2 Integra, a Mitsubishi Evo 6 TME/RS/Extreme have always been on the wish list together with a 944 or early 911 Porsche, however, I still have a love affair with the Mk1 Golf or Scirocco and would love to build a more usable, but equally high performance car along the lines of a Porsche Club Sport trim level which I could use on the road and at drive days/hill climbs. Problem being I understand that highly modified cars are somewhat frowned upon and difficult to register here in AU? so a wild 220+bhp N/A Mk1 Golf with a roll cage and sequential gearbox might attract a lot of attention and be no quicker than a mildly tuned Type R Honda...

Driving Bathurst in a highly tuned Mk1 is on the bucket list!

Over the next couple of months I expect I will be keeping an eye out for any 3 door Mk1 potential project cars and also getting up to speed with project cars from Australia (I seem to remember a very nice white Mk1 from Tas a year or so back?) whilst offering help and advice where I can. If something came up with a straight body local to QLD then I would be very tempted.

Is there anyone here competing in IPR, or other motorsport series in an early VW. I was thinking that historic touring cars would be an interesting series to enter a Mk1 GTI into.

Hi mate, welcome. I'm on the gold coast, there are a few people around with Mk1s who sometimes get together. There's actually a group on Facebook started by a guy on here, username Revnit (Andrew Bax). Nice cars that you had too, particularly the red mk1. I'd love to make my 3dr into something like that one day.

Where are you based on the coast, and what do you do for a living?

Hi and welcome to the forum. Like your collection of cars and mods done. You are right about highly modified cars attracting the wrong kind of attention. If funds permitted your ideal clollection (Evo TMR, 944, etc) would be fun, if not having one useable high performance car makes a lot of sense. Thanks for your offer of advice, would like to see you do up an N/A 944
