Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • TAS Potential Polo or Golf GTI Owner

    Hey All,

Looking into buying a GTI from around the 06 era. My Subaru recently got stolen and burnt out and now I'm on the hunt to find something to replace it. Having alot of trouble deciding but the Polos price point is certainly a plus.

Do people here think that the Polo would be a good city car with an occasional squirt?

My polo is a great little city car. The golf is a more sophisticated, faster car, but the polo is lighter and plenty of fun at street legal speeds. Have a drive and see what floats your boat

Thats the plan. Im not sure how I feel about the false engine noise thing either. Seems missleading.

I don't think any 06 model golf or polos had fake engine sounds.. That's a recent "feature"

Good to hear. I personally think its silly. Do you find the Turbo on the Polo just increases its powerband or does it have a fun turbo pull?

Stock polo gti the turbo comes on fairly smoothly and just makes the motor feel more torquey. Once chipped the character changes and you feel the turbo come on strong. Will light up the front tyres when it comes on boost in first gear without dropping the clutch which is fun

will do it in second too depending on road surface

When I bought mine almost 4yrs ago, it came down to the dollar difference. Bang for buck was the polo, as size wasn't a consideration. I left it stock power for 3yrs with only suspension mods which kept me happy. The tune and appropriate supporting mods transforms the car, as I'm sure they'd also do on a golf. But for build quality/refinement, the golf would get the nod.

Hi Uppy welcome! Sorry to hear about your subaru - I am sure you will enjoy the vw whichever one you choose! The golfs have dropped a fair bit in price now that the Mk6's are selling secondhand...but it is your decision! There is a polo on gumtree 2009 Volkswagen Polo Hatchback GTI Turbo | Cars | Gumtree Australia Sorell Area - Dodges Ferry It is a 2009 model and a bit more expensive. Also keep your eye out in Kings Motor Co in North Hobart. I bought my golf from there in March last year. They are excellent to deal with and quite regularly get new stock in.

Go for it! It is a pretty good price for a Tasmanian car! All of them in Tassie seem to be above 20k. E.g. 2006 Volkswagen Golf GTi Hatchback | Cars | Gumtree Australia Launceston Area - Launceston 7250 although this one has done a fair few less k's. It is from a dealer as well so it should be fairly safe
