WA Potential GTI Owner

Hi all,

A potential GTI (Polo or Golf) owner signing in from WA, currently driving a Ford Focus 2L (NA). I'll be checking out the fora thoroughly. A little worried about reports of VW reliability, and the Polo's oil drinking problem, but I'm guessing a lot of that reputation is from VW haters and people who don't actually have a VW.

Thanks for your replies. I must consider the oil issue carefully, then... The price advantage of the Polo is attractive, though. I guess that's what warranties are for.

Both. It's obviously a hard working engine that needs more than average amounts of oil to do its thing in the normal course of events. But there are some horror stories of people whose cars are requiring a litre of oil per 1000 km, necessitating consumption tests and/or replacement rings, even motors in extreme cases.

yep, that does seem a little bit excessive. though if it is an issue, I'm sure VAG will be addressing it

Hi Rubbadub, I am aware of a local Perth member who had an engine replaced on a new Polo GTI after only a couple of thousand km due to piston rings failing. Not to say there are problems with every car, but the issues have probably been resolved in time for MY13 vehicles. There's a useful thread in the 6R Polo section which should cover any concerns about them.
