Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Just bought a MY12.5 or MY13? Suppose I will find out this saturday upon delivery

    Just a quick intro,
Been around the modified car scene for a while now (mainly nissans money pits), just put a deposit down for what I think is a MY12.5 Polo Gti 5 door in candy white with 10km's on the dial. Its going to be my daily and the skyline is being retired to weekend use only.
The reason for the title is I've been reading through a heap of threads and lots are stating MY13's are delivered with the 'Detroit' black & polished wheels..... Well from what I've seen from the pics of my car (yes I put a deposit down from online pics only), it was listed as MY12.5 but IS fitted with the Detroit wheels and the dealer has told me it they came delivered like that the day before.
I'm not too fussed if its a 12.5 & not a 13 (didn't know there was a MY13 about to land on aussie shores), because I didn't have to wait 9 months as I was first quoted when I test drove one for the first time last year.
I just happened to be there at the right time when it was put up for sale.

Anyway, looking forward to picking it up on saturday & breaking it in.
Is there a definitive answer to how to break these cars in for lower oil consumption?
I'm a bit worried about all this high oil usage talk, I'm planning on driving it hard from day one.

The engine number starts with CAV42 and was built May this year...The model number is 6R19V75/13
Cheers in advance if anyone can confirm if its a MY12.5 or 13 from info provided.
    Rob

    First impressions

Ok, so I've had the car for about 3 weeks now and learnt a lot about the car in that short time period.
So to confirm, it is an MY13 (pretty obvious now) with the CAV engine spec. Pretty happy that we managed to get colour & body style that I wanted without having to put money down & wait 9 months (that was the time I was quoted when I last stepped into a VW dealership a while ago).

I don't think MY13 is without its problems though, the oil temp on the MFD hasn't worked from day one, have to take it back to the dealership to fix apparently,
I've developed a rattle in the dash under certain acceleration conditions, and the shift pattern in the DSG has gone a bit weird with it very eager to shift up into 7 instead of holding the lower gears for longer on light throttle applications, also doesn't seem as eager to kick down as it was when I picked it up, I've found myself driving it with the paddles more and more.
I think there is a rattle in the left rear speaker and noticed scratches on the glass where it looks like a sticker has been scrapped off with a dodgy razor blade.

I'm still really chuffed with the car and love driving it everyday, but starting to get a little concerned if VDub ownership is going to be a love/hate relationship with lots of headaches this early on.

My friend just picked his black MY13 Gti up last week, same blank oil temp issue on MFD as me & he got a engine shudder & die after only 200km on the clock, with lots of check engine & ring service flashing lights on the dash as he was left stranded in the middle of the road, hazards flashing.
