Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • New 118TSI

    Hi
I am a new user. Currently own a 2001 VW Bora V5 manual and a 2010 passat wagon 125 tdi. Looking to trade in my Bora for a golf MY13 118TSI DSG. I am horrified at the list of issues listed in the forum. Should I be worried with the latest MY13 version? I have paid a $1000 deposit. 2 week delivery. I am wondering if I should talk to the dealership and upgrade to 103TDI...

People generally join forums because they're enthusiast or because they want to share a bad experience, there's rarely posts from people saying their car is great to offset the negative posts (besides this thread). Also keep in mind that if there are niggles VW will fix them for free under warranty, whereas upgrading to a 103TDI (I wouldn't personally call it an upgrade, more a sideways step), you'll face more costs now (purchase price) and more in future ($1200+ service every 60,000kms for 6-speed DSG), clearing out the DPF (filter) if needed depending on your driving style and route characteristics.

I've driven loan cars from VW when getting mine serviced and the DSG7 in the new 90TSI and Jetta are fantastic compared to my 2009 model, so I'm confident they fixed the issue in the 118TSI as well. If the test drive went well for you then I see no reason to be overly anxious. 118 is a absolutely fantastic car, esp when you remap the ECU for extra power.
Some say he was the Stig... all we know is that he drives a VW Transporter.

Gives me a bit more confidence in going with the 118tsi. The dealer quoted $2000 for the Vw extended warranty. Will negotiate on the price and also ring around for other quotes. Read your posts on Allianz vs Vw warranty. Might stick to the VW one.

While I agree with this, that doesn't mean that everyone else who does not post have had problem free cars. In fact, majority of the people I know who has had major problems with their cars (all brands, not necessarily VW's) do not post online. I have found that compared to the cars I have owned, the 118+DSG7 seem to have had the most number of recalls and service campaigns. Now why is that and what does that suggest?

Having said that, my car is still awesome to drive. I love it and do not regret my purchase decision, but that doesn't mean that I should ignore this information, anecdotal or otherwise.

Ended up changing the order to a 103 TDI. The dealership were very good. Now to sell my V5 Bora, manual.
