Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • POM alert... but hey im still a dubber!

    Hi all,

Just moved over from the UK and am starting my second month in Brisbane. I've been a long time dub-head and have owned quite a few in my time, mostly Golfs though.

One of the cars worth mentioning was my 1988 MKII Golf GTi 16v in monza blue (hence my forum name!)... I did a 2.0L ABF block conversion from a MK3 Golf GTi 16V and had a new crank installed for good measure along with new KS pistons (plus just about every other nut, bolt, sensor etc...). The head was also rebuilt and gas flowed and it made a very healthy 172 bhp with 155 ft/lb on the rolling road. The car sat on coilovers and 7x15 BBS RM split rim alloys and had a miltek stainless steel exhaust. Fuelling was also altered slightly by modifying the WUR (a little trick the guys at Stealth racing did for me) - gotta love that Bosch k-jet mechanical FI system...

I am not a traffic light hero or anything - but if you are gonna come right up my arse on the motorway and try to force me off the road, be prepared for the repercussions! I just loved seeing the look on people's faces (mostly Merc and BMW drivers!) when they just got their a$$ handed to them by a 1988 golf (which in all fairness had a fair bit of money thrown at it .. but still, the look was priceless)

I remember having a little tussle with an 2003 Audi S3 and he only started pulling away when we got to about 130 mph (210 km/h) he couldn't believe it and we actually stopped on the side of the (private) road and had a really good chat about cars and VW's/Audi in general - he was a top bloke. That is what I love about the VW scene, I have met so many cool people in the 20 odd years I have been into veedubs.

Some photos of her: ImageShack Album - 5 images

Unfortunately some tit taxi driver ran into the back of her and she went to the big scrap yard in heaven (one of the saddest days of my life!). But alas it was time to move on and so I went and bought a car I had always told myself I would own one day.... a Corrado VR6. I managed to find a fairly low mileage 1995 Corrado VR6 Storm in Mystic blue. It looked a bit rough on the outside, but mechanically and structurally it was sound. I could go on about this car for ages, but if you are interested in everything that happened to it then take a look at my owner's thread on the corrado forums (warning : make a big cup of tea beforehand as the thread is long and has lots of photos!)

(i hope that is ok to do on this forum? - if not then mods please just delete the link)

Anyway - I am looking for my first car in Australia and from what I have seen, decent German machinery has a serious price premium. So whilst my first car here may not be a VW/Audi, I am no doubt sure that sometime in the future i will get my mitts on something which puts that smile back on my face. Ohh...and I WILL own another MK2 golf in the future

Thanks all, look forward to maybe meeting some more people in the next Brisbane meet (as long as I actually have a car by then so i can get there!)

    cheers
    H

H, welcome to Brisbane and the forum mate. I used to be on the Corrado forum, before I came to Australia in 2006. Same user name.

If you need any help looking at cars or VCDS scans or whatever hit me up.

Meeting in Newmarket next Friday night, hope that's convenient for you.

cheers Gavin - blimey I was just thinking that username looked familiar!

Thanks for the offer of a helping hand with cars/ VCDS etc .. that is much appreciated mate. Right now I am down in the southern suburbs (Calamvale) so frantically looking for a decent car around the $11K mark so we can get about (I still havn't recovered from the shock of the difference in price of the second hand used car market vs. the UK)

Having just moved out here we are still getting set up at the moment and so me having a nice MK V R32 are a little way off - just a few other priorities at the moment. I was thinking something along the likes of a Honda Civic or Toyota will be my best bet as I just need something relatively cheap and reliable for the moment. Alas, the search on carsales continues!

Hope to see you and some other folks at the meet next Friday. I'll take a look in the other forum for the details of the meet / timings etc.

      cheers

Prices would be a shocker to you with the current strength of the AUD. I came when it was $2.5 to the pound. Still cars were more expensive then. I paid 16K for a 98 A3 turbo with leather. You could have bought 4 with the same money in the UK at the time. They'd have been well rusty though. Mine was in good condition.

11k would nearly see you in an S3 I reckon. Mine was 16K 3 years ago with Starship mileage just rolled over 250K last week. Goes well still though.

Be good to catch you next week. Need to make up and excuse! My S3 is silver, Dark metallic wheels on it.

looks like the only S3's available around the region are 2000 models around the $13K to $14K mark with about 140Km's on the clock (from carsales).

Seen a Honda Accord, 2006 with 80K on it going for 12K which seems to be the sensible option. Hmm... this may be the first sensible option i have ever had to make! (well.. when it comes to buying cars anyway)

            Welcome to the forum.

the mk 2 looks super tidy and I'm just about to read through the corrado thread now

welcome to australia! If you think the prices of 2nd hand cars are bad, pop into a dealer ship sometime soon! haha
it's not all bad though, atleast our cars dont rust away after 5 years and Brissy should be nice and sunny!

Good luck on your search for a new car!

One thing you'll have to get used to like most of us is actually sticking to the speed limits over here. Europeans turn a blind eye but here they're all for the revenue!

thanks for the welcome - hope you enjoyed the Corrado thread Jarred.

Ohh trust me, I know all about the speeding fines here in Australia. I got fined a few years ago when I was here on holiday - 5 kilometers over the 100 limit which equated to about 3mph! My jaw hit the floor when I got that lovely letter and fine through the post a month after I returned back to the UK. To make matters worse, they fined me twice in the space of a few kilometers... (it was one long road between Melbourne and the great ocean road I got done on)
