Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • QLD Wheels for Mk2 GTI help

Top of the world to you all.

I need some help with wheels for my Mk2 gti.
I'm found some 16" x 7 ET38 wheels for a good price. although I'm not sure if they will fit! Will I need spacers ? I've been googling but have not really got a confirmed yes.

I am unable to measure against the car to to a full engine & gear box rebuild being underway ( the car is no going anywhere for a while)

has anyone fitted this wheel configuration ? will they rub on the struts ? will they poke out of the wheel arches ? will I need spacers?

any assistance would be great on this as I'd like to buy the wheels but don't want any major headaches with fitting.

ps the tyres I have are 2x 19/45/16 & 2x 215/40/16 from what I read are ok to install on these wheels

I don't think they'll be too far wrong. Most fitments would list 7x16ET25 but that really overtracks the car. OE from memory was 5x13ET45 or 5.5x13ET38 maybe 6x14ET33 to 38.

If they work out OK it will steer very nicely with no tramlining or rubbing.

    I'm not into overtracking cars.

I'm running 16x7.5 et25 and they rub slightly with 215/40/16s.

ET38 is standard for a MK2. I reckon the biggest wheels VW fitted standard were on the GTI G60, these were BBS RMs in 6.5 x 15 ET38. Going up half an inch, 1/4 a side on the wheel is nothing. Only extreme lowering would cause you problems.

I ran several different sets of 7 x 15 on my G60 without problems.

EDIT, those back tyres might be borderline if it's lowered to death. I'd buy them

EDIT 2 No fat chicks in the back and you'll be ok. (from a sticker I saw years ago)

Always I get this problem that It couldn't fit exactly at the diameter of you wheel. Well I agree with above post, he really expose his idea very well.ET38 is standard for a MK2
