    Hi everyone,

I have been in Perth now for nearly a year and it's time for me to get myself back in to vw's.

I have seen a car I like in Adelaide and would fly to get it and drive back. The car will have SA rego on it.

The bit that confuses me is getting it registered to WA. Can I drive it with the remaining SA rego on it till it runs out and then register it in WA or does it have to be registered in WA straight away. Also, will the car have to go over the pits? The car is totally standard and will be about $12,000. I am looking to do this the cheapest and easiest way. Will I be liable to pay stamp duty aswell?

If anyone has done this your help will be much appreciated

    Cheers
    Alan

You always get tagged for stamp duty, no matter what the price is. The costs vary between states though. Usually you shouldn't run on interstate rego. However, I have bought a few cars interstate and always push the limits.....

You can claim a refund from the cars' home state, VIC is dead easy, NSW take the mick with the paperwork. Not sure what SA would be like, I was living there at the time.

Have you tried hard to find one in WA. Sydney to Adelaide is a fair drive. Perth would have to be a good bit further.

    Good luck.

      Cheers mate,

Yeh I'm going to have to pay stamp duty. Think my main concern is if it has to go over the pits to register it in WA. Do you know if this is the case or do I just fill in the paperwork, pay the stamp duty and that is it?

I'm looking at a polo gti and cheapest one in WA is $17000 but have seen one with lower mileage in SA for $12000 so it is a huge saving. Can get a flight for $200 and it's a 30 hour drive but I'll blitz it over a weekend

      Cheers

        G'day mate.
My Dad and I have bought 2 cars interstate. Both have been from car dealers though.
The first one we flew down to Sydney and drove it back up. The second one we had trucked from Melbourne up to Brisbane.
The first one we drove up to QLD with the NSW rego, HOWEVER the car was a NSW registered in Dad's name. We had to get it re-registered in QLD within 14 days of brining it up here. It didn't have to have a roadworthy seeing as it still had NSW rego. This meant that we did lose money on registering it. But we could apply for a refund on the remaining NSW rego.
The second one had to be trucked up with no rego from VIC this meant that we had to go to the closest QLD registered roadworthy certificater? then to the closest department of transport to re-register it in QLD.

So yeah it can be a piss around going interstate and they all have different rules. Best thing to do is just research what the RTA thing of each state says. But I think if you changed the rego into your own name at purchase in SA then drove it up to perth and re-registered it in WA in your name then you would only need a roadworthy certificate and just apply for the refund of the left over SA rego.

        Hope that helps mate

          Cheers for the info mate

It is crazy how each state is different and classes state to state as an import.

I'm going to call RTA and find out the story to see how easy or hard this may be

                  Hi Alan,

I bought my Golf from Adelaide as well. You will need to take it over the pits once it is here to get it passed for WA registration. I saved a bit of money by paying stamp duty in SA with the original plates as their stamp duty is a bit lower than WA's but you might not be able to do that any more. When I then got WA plates a few months later I only had to pay the registration no stamp duty as the existing plates were already in my name.

                  Cheers
                  Geoff.
