Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • VIC Brand Newbie. T4. Dear lord what have I done....

    Greetings and salutations.

or should I say Guten Tag!?

At the ripe old age of 30, I've finally bought my first car. It's a 1998 Transporter (T4 2.0 Manual).

I got it pretty cheap, so I was expecting that there might be a little bit of maintenance to do on it....

    How very right I was.

I've been reading this forum for a while. It seems to mostly be Golf's and newer models, but I've managed to find answers to most of my questions.
Thanks to the dude that posted this. http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/foru...ers-23268.html That's been super helpful.

In the six months since I've had it I've...

    1. Worn out the rubber/plastic ball joints in the gear selector. (On new years eve ) ($20) Bottom left of this image. If I can fix this, anyone can...

    2. Lined the back, cut a hole in the cargo barrier, and built a bed/shelfy thing.

    3. Had a service.

    4. Busted a coil. (towing+$180)

    5. Broke the fan belt idler wheel in the middle of nowhere. (towing+$170+some train tickets)

    6. And just today it looks like I'll be needing a new alternator. ($more money I don't have)

So all in all, it seems like an absolute gem.

      welcome mate!

Nice to see another T4! There are not too many around, but those who have one normally keep them forever. Just remember to have a new engine handy when you click over approx. 1.500.000kms

Have a look in the van section, there are some threads around!
