  • Golf V TDI

Hi people, i am after some info on Tdi's.
We have had a Golf V Tdi since new and are big fans.
We are about to upgrade to Mark VI GTD and i'm wondering how different the motor is, aside from the increase in power.

Our current Tdi has over 140 000km on the clock and we have just replaced EGR and the flap/valve, which has cost a fair bit of money. Does anyone know if VW have improved the way the Tdi deals with emissions system, especially as far as serviceability goes. Is the emissions system on Mark V identical as Mark VI GTD?
( i know about the after market oil collector).

We do love this car but need to be better informed, thanks for any info.

Unfortunately with newer TDI Golfs, Volkswagen have introduced a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) which captures excess soot which eventually re-generates turning it into ash.

Replacement DPF costs a very high and are considered as a perishable item by VW. DPF is also considered quite restrictive on performance.

Check the Diesel section on the DPF in Greg Roles "Let the Tinkering...." posts. Cheers.

The Provent 200 is an aftermarket product you can purchase to capture excess blow-by oil.

Welcome to the forum! Golf6 TDI engine as you probably know is common rail diesel your MK5 TDI is unit injector. VW also changed the crankcase ventilation system in the CR diesels. Regardless of that, I will still instal the Provent200 in our 2 CRD Tiguans, though.

Despite having the DPF system in place, the new set up is better to drive and also tunes well. A good tune will also aid in the non-failure of the dpf. City driving is the killer for emmissions systems.

The new CR engines are miles smoother than the old PD ones, especially at low rpm and they seem to rev more freely. Basically, they feel closer to a petrol engine (having compared your version of 103kW TDi to the MkVI equivalent).

Thanks everyone for the info, i assume VW is continually tinkering and improving their systems, i was really pissed at 5 visits to service centre and total of $1400 at fixing something that seemed like it should be part of a servicing schedule. It was prob such a big disappointment due to just how much we were loving the Tdi. What a great car otherwise.

we will likely sign contract on GTD soon.

Can i fit the Provent while vehicle is being serviced under warranty ? What will the service centre think?

I have just began posting in the Polo section as we have bought a MY13 Polo Gti, and realised when i read my old post that it was not really the full story.
The Golf Tdi ended up going back to the shop like 10 times, in the end we kicked up such a stink that they only charged us for parts, something like $400, and they admitted they didn't know what they were doing. We did'nt buy the Golf GTD as planned but hung on to the old Golf TDi and now clocked up over 180,000Km until a few weeks ago when it was traded in for the Polo Gti.

I have to say in defense of the Mk5 Tdi, apart from the ****ty service centre not knowing how to repair the EGR etc, that car was fantastic. I really wanted to hit the 200 000Km mark but my partner found her new car and its welcome Polo Gti.
