Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Hey guys,

Longtime semi-lurker here, finally found a good reason to ask a question of my own. I'm not very experienced with engines but I'd definitely like to learn - especially diesels, as my little boat has one too.

I'm driving a Mk5 Golf GT TDI 170 from 2008 - one of the earliest ones to come to Aus according to the dealership, and, I think, the earliest one in Tas (though I'm not in Tas anymore). I've put about 88k on the clock from new, 80% of that on the open road. It's been a fantastic highway car - great stability at high speeds and nice road feel. Being a diesel, perhaps less of what you'd call personality, though.

Very shortly after the warranty expired last year, there was a fairly catastrophic engine failure while I was doing 100 on the highway - the engine died completely and with no warning. That very nearly caused a nasty accident. VW, however, were very good about it despite the warranty having expired and replaced what turned out to be the injectors - a $3000 job for free

That was a while back though, and I have some more specific questions (unrelated to injectors, that was just a war story) that I'll save for the next post

    Welcome.

    Your experience is not unique

Glad to hear you survived without anyone getting hurt.

You should check out the diesel subforum and add your details to this thread
