Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Resell Value Golf/Polo GTi

    Hey All,

Still a newbie here and figured I could use this section as it's not directed to one particular model. I'm still in the market for a Golf or Polo GTi. Having driven only a Polo and Mk5 Golf I'm starting to have thoughts on a Mk6 Golf.

I'm sure this has come up a bit on the forums but I wanted to be more specific and ask to see what peoples opinions are on resell value for both models? Looking at some of these second hand Polo's the prices rocket through up to some prices of the Golf's. Do you think the current Polo model will keep it's trend in years to come or it will fizzle out?
    Cheers

PS if there is a better location for this post I can repost there.

Get a 9n3 Polo GTI. 1.8 turbo 20 valve, easily tuneable and manual. Looking anywhere between 10K - 20k depending on year and kms. Go quick when chipped too. Good luck finding a 6 R Polo GTI, but they do come up

Nah I don't like the old Polo's and plus that ain't much of an upgrade for me. I'm looking 2010 or newer and only the current Polo.

See redbook.com.au to check how various models have depreciated, and what a particular type of vehicle is worth.

The current Polo and Golf both have pretty good resale in general, and I can't see why that'd change too much with time. Bear in mind that a car that's been heavily optioned will always depreciate more than one that's had fewer options fitted.

These would have to be non-factory fitting options.

I'm finding it hard to decide, my major concern is resell, running costs inc fuel, services etc and then price of course. I'm strongly heading Polo but when I see a Golf only a couple thousand away I get tempted. My current car is 7.9L/100km the Polo is 6.5 and the Golf is 7.7. They are both lower but not significantly. Well the Polo is....

I guess you should probably look at if they run on 91/95/98 RON too.
The Golf is 7.6L/100km in DSG form also, which would (I'm guessing) be a better option if you're concerned in resale.

I've found that GTI models seem to sell for above the redbook value. I don't know what defines this, but I've been on carsales for the last couple of years with friends etc buying/selling GTI's, and they seem to keep their value above that of the stated redbook value.

Yeah I recommend staying away from Redbook for prices. It's a good indication but it's by all means not accurate. After having my first DC2 stolen and only getting $16,500 back from a 3 month old purchase price of $19k I don't believe Redbook at all. I learn't to always have an agreed value with insurance companies... This is why I reckon the prices are wrong in Redbook.
