Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • New too VW.....Polo 6R or Golf Mk5 GTI

    Hey All,

As many others have said I've been doing some VW research and a lot of links bring me here, so I joined, figured I'd get some first hand info.

Currently own a DC2 Honda Type R and looking to upgrade to a more practical/comfortable ride without losing performance. I'm stuck in a rut between the Golf and Polo. Undecided on which I should choose. Keeping in mind that fuel consumption is a major draw card.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Thanks Guys

    Welcome to the forum!
If the fuel economy is the priority and the size of the Polo is enough for you, then it's easy decision to make. But keep in mind that for the long distance travel Golf would be a better car.

      Thanks for the welcome

I thought about long distance travel but I rarely ever drive long distances, last time I drove more then 500km was about 5 yrs ago. It's good to know though so thanks. The Golf is a more comfy ride having driven both I just don't know if there is anything I should be concerned about having buying a Golf with 50k kms or buying a newer Polo.

I guess it's the luck of the draw on either...lol

The Pog is more likely to be under factory warranty, which can be extended (see the sticky in the MkV forum) and given you are coming from a Type R I'm guessing we are talking the GTi variants in both cases?
Most of the MkV golf's on here are well over 50k, and the k's don't seem to matter if things do go wrong (some have had things fail at 30k, others fine well over 100k) but don't let that put you off.
Bear in mind though if you are talking a Polo 6R GTi, it is DSG only, whereas with the Golf GTi's you get the choice.

          Hey,

Yeah both are GTI's it's just the model difference, if I could afford it I would get the current Golf Gti but my budget is under 30k (second hand).

I would probably go DSG on the golf anyways. The warranty is a big plus and resell value too.
