Hello all,
I'm a relatively new Skoda Superb Elegance V6 sedan owner & stumbled across the Skoda forum via Google, while seekingtechnical spec information about specific Skoda parts & while researching feedback from actual owners, before I bought the car.
I'm recently retired with a lot of family, old & young, in rural Australia. Our need & want to travel, os the reason we've bought this Skoda. It is in my view an ideal choice for safe comfortable open road travel. Since the late 1960s, I've owned manual Falcon GTs or XR8s. As time has gone on, the desire for white knuckle blood & thunder has waned. So too has my tolerance for bashing my head on low racked roof lines every time I want to get in the car & adopting increasingly compromised seating positions to reach pedals designed for people with 8 foot legs. I'm a big bloke, but not built to fit Fords or Holdens anymore. It is pure pleasure to get in & out of the Superb these days & to be able sit in comfort & steer in the most comfortable position on trips.
The car I've bought is a Skoda demonstrator which I believe was used as a VIP vehicle during the Tour Downunder. The car is everything we want plus more included & had 3400kms on the clock when bought. In deed the car is effectively brand new & well in factory warranty. The price offered was far too good to pass up & definitley better spent than on the alternatives.
The car is proving perfect for our need, very frugal on trips, but hungerier than my last XR8 in the city, no matter how carefully driven. I'm sure I'll learn to fix that; possibly by using manual mode more often & short shifting to higher gears than the auto drive lingers in. I can see my interest in the forum being about sharing information on the "how tos" with a Superb, be it working with bluetooth units, decyphering & sharing build codes, experience with the likes of suitable tyres & parts & prices. I am already somewhat disappointed by VW's price gouging on Skoda parts out here, relative to prices in Europe. The gaps are far too big to be put down to "freight". When pricing a 5th Themisto a few weeks ago, the UK price was equivalent to A$245, compared with quotes from various dealers of between $449 & $569 around Sydney. The difference being so big I was tempted to ring old relatives in Scotland to buy one for me & mail it out to me! The arbitrage on Skoda parts will likely lure some entrepeneur to organise "import" & online slae in Australia sooner or later, as Skoda ownership grows. BTW, contary to popular folk law, the full size 18" fits in the wheel well without any displacement of the boot floor .. all one has to do is trim the foam bat wings off the tool holder block. (I don't want to be stranded between Parkes & Tottenham whiela local garage takes 4-5 days to freight a 225.40.18 in at full RRP + freight. Even in Sydney, tyre shops don't carry the size & only order in on demand.)
OK, that's a fair indication of me, the car, its use & my interests in the forum.
Very best wishes to all & I hope to contribute as well as learn from posts here.
