Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • What gearbox Do I have ?

    Hello

I need some help to identify my gearbox.

looks as though the dif has spat the dummy, light knocking noise & a wearing noise above 20 kph. After replacing all the CV's
    the noise was still there.
I've foud there is a lot of movement on the dif. = rebuild.

trouble is Im not 100% sure what my gearbox is. the code on the bellhousing is CHB15036 14 5. the is a code AR on the dif housing.

look at parts available on line most/all are for 020 type. is my box a 020 ? how can I find out as this is my daily driver and need to get parts quickish.

    can anyone help.

ps. I got the car mid last year it is meant to be a mk2 8v gti, But the road worthy I got with the car was completely dodgy so I can't be sure.

Yep, your box is an 020 type. CHB is your gearbox code which specifies gear ratios etc for your particular box.

CHB isn't usually found in MK2 GTIs, it's most likely from a newer MK3 CL or SEAT Cordoba.

    Ratios are 3.45 1.94 1.37 1.03 0.85 FDR 3.67

Look here for lots of 020 information http://www.brokevw.com/
