Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • ACT Mk1 Golf 2dr (but not for long...)

    Hi everyone,

Pleased to make all your acquaintances. I've been a guest reader for a number of years, but recent decisions have moved me to register formally. As the title suggests, I am the current custodian of a Mk1 Golf. It's a 1976 LS, and while my younger sister is the current owner, the car resides here with me in Canberra.

The tasty bits are that it has a 1.8L SOCH motor from a later model Cabbie, but is running a Weber DG rather than EFI, and through the 4sp manual. It's a bit of fun and the motor has a bit to give in something so light.

I'm new to VWWC but I've been involved in other forums devoted to some of our domestic product, and while it's only a hobby, I'm not a lummox with a spanner (or tungsten inert gas for that matter). I submit as reference something which I built as a daily a few years back:

Yep... that's an FMIC hiding down there:

I figure haters gonna hate, but if you have questions about building a blow-through turbo-carburettor setup, and getting it engineered according to the national code (VSB14), I'd be happy to answer them. Although, given the price of imported turbo VAG motors I can see that there's less re-inventing of the wheel required for people who want more pace. I wanted something different, and the day the engineer told me everything was good to go to the registry is one of my happiest.

The XF was ridiculous and subsequently replaced with something that has more appropriately sized turbos (just more of them) and is somewhat more controllable if no less rapid:

It's fast and loud, and in the process of being made faster. But I digress...

The Mk1 has recently be brought out of storage, where it rested broken and busted. I've got it running and got some parts in from Europe too. There was plenty of inspiration for me as I went to the German car shows on the lawns of the National Library the last few years. I had planned to build a 2L 8v with a rorty cam for it, keeping it on the Weber (carbs always sound better imo), upgrade to a 5sp and it would be a slightly more economical runabout than the rx7 (the rumours are true, turbo rx7s are the some of the fastest cars between petrol stations).

However, it's not to be, and I don't have the time or the funds to build two projects; I don't have need for a daily, and as you can gather, the temptation for me has always been to go faster. It's time for it to move the Mk1 on to pastures new, or the big race-track in the sky.

Acknowledging the sensitivities around new VWWC users and abuse of the free classifieds, I've contributed financially to the site's maintenance, as this only seems fair. As it's a 2dr with a straight-ish body, I figured it would probably be of the most use to one of the VWWC members, and you'll probably find it in there in the classifieds in the near future. Perhaps this is frowned upon in this section, but PM me if you're interested.

    Cheers,
