Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • New here, looking for advice with my mk3 Golf

Firstly, this has more than likely been covered in many previous threads I’m sure although I have tried to scroll through many of them and understand some points people have covered off although I find myself still struggling with what wheels would best suit my golf.

Basically this car is my first solely own car, it is a 1996 Golf hatchback 1.8l GL and i have decided to perform a rustoeleum paint job on it either going white or black (haven’t quite decided yet) but I am struggling with what wheels would best suit the car for after the paint job is complete.

I am looking for cheap ideas, (replica wheels etc) but again struggling to understand wheel offset measurements etc and have looked through many sites trying to find decent 4 stud rims.

So, I was hoping that perhaps I could get some helpful pointers here in terms of what wheels you would start with for a black or white Golf and if I should go 17” or even is 18" possible? And the costs involved for wheel and tyre packages?

Apologies once again as I am new to car projects although i am really looking forward to seeing some suggestions and possibly understanding more into what costs would be involved keeping it as cheap as possible

p.s thanks in advance to those who reply and I’m looking forward to staying active here posting pictures etc of my progress and learning from other experts here on how to improve other areas of the car such as headlights etc etc

Welcome!! With the wheels 17 inch is pretty much as big as most people will go because 18's are hard to pull off, with the offset I'm not too sure about (hopefully someone else will chime in here but I believe anything over et 20 should be okay, but I'm not 100% on that.

Can't really offer any help on the paint as I don't know anyone who's had to respray their car!!

Hopefully some other people will be able to help more than me!!

      Thanks for the reply pal,

In the back of my mind i was thinking 17" is probably as high as i can go without causing an issues although if anyone knows any decent 18" 4 stud rims that fit with cheap low profile tires id be interested in knowing where i can get them?

worst part for me is i have no idea how the offset measurements work? can someone please explain? id like to buy some cheap rims off ebay or an online seller although i see 4 stud rims online with measurements and have no idea wheather they will fit or not.
