Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • TAS Testing the DSG gearbox in a second hand jetta

    Going to have a look at this Jetta : 2007 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA TDI DSG 1KM MY08 Sedan Cars For Sale in TAS - carsales.com.au 1529 1246 1247 1252 1282 1216&silo=Stock&find=jetta |CarAll

What sort of test/what things should I look for to check that the DSG is not on the way out!

(have had a quick search and it seems the main thing to watch is shuddering gear changes at low speed)

Just pretend your in a slow line of heavy traffic where the start/stop actions are unpredictable. Also try the slow start/stop movements going up a hill.
Some say he was the Stig... all we know is that he drives a VW Transporter.

Our TDI Jetta @47k kms is in for a new mechatronic unit this Wednesday. The symptoms we are experiencing, excess lag on take off, hesitation at low speeds and slight jerking coming to a stop.

also check that the gear changes are smooth no matter what throttle % you have applied. There should be no lag between changes.

I've done 80,000 ks in my 2009 1.6 litre Jetta TDI with DSG.
Initially I (and especially my wife) found the DSG a bit awkward whilst parking; especially on a slope; in that it "lets go" with small reductions of power and you'll find yourself rolling away; also a bit harsh when picking up the drive in the same situation when you increase power.
From all accounts I believe this is quite "normal" behaviour for the DSG. In normal driving its brilliant in utilising the limited power of this "baby" diesel. Being in the country I don't get to do stop start; but imagine how it might be annoying if it does the "parking speed tricks" I've experienced.

Excellent thanks for the helpful hints!

Have driven 2 golfs and 1 jetta with the DSG and have noticed them not to have any problems that i could tell so far. All changed quickly and quietly and even on down shift didnt jerk or halt.

Noticed one whilst on a hill it sort of hesitated a bit on take off! Will be intereseting to se what this one will be like! Much else I should look for in these cars? Have checked that DSG service has been done at 60,000.

When you say hesitation, do you mean it just rolled back slightly before the gear engaged and took off? If that's all it was, that is to be expected because it takes a second for the computer to engage the clutch to move from neutral (while the car is stopped) to 1st (when you take your foot off the brake and go to excellerate).

If there was a big enough hesitation that you needed to put your foot on the brake again to stop from rolling back, then I would be concerned!

It shouldn't roll back at all unless for some reason the hillstart assist has been turned off by dealer or VCDS. On an incline (of something like 20 / 30% or more?) when you let go of the brakes it will still hold the brakes for you for an extra second to prevent rolling back. That could be the delay you feel.

I thought it was only MY09 onwards that had hill assist?
